Minimum Qualification:
1. High school diploma or equivalent
2. Previous kitchen management experience; purchasing and inventory control knowledge desirable
3. Current ServSafe Certification OR the ability to acquire certification within 6 months of hire
4. Knowledge of community food resources preferred
5. Ability to handle multiple tasks, set priorities, and deal with interruptions in a busy environment
6. An interest in working with the elderly and/or disabled clients is highly desirable
7. Ability to work harmoniously with and supervise professional and support personnel
8. Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures necessary to maintain a sound organization
9. Knowledge of laws, regulations, and guidelines governing food services and personnel administration
10. Demonstrable proficiency with MS Word and Excel
11. Current Alaska driver's license with acceptable driving and criminal history reports
Essential Function:
1. Responsible for operation of the SAFE Center Food Services Program; develops systems and provides dietary services according to accepted standards of care; and coordinates dietetic services with programs receiving food services from the SAFE Center Kitchen
2. Cooperates with other department staff and outside resources to provide a well coordinated program designed to meet all clients' nutritional needs
3. Develops understanding of functions of each participating program and coordinates with relevant program directors
4. Develops menus as necessary, building in the flexibility to make maximum use of donated food and food from the Food Bank of Alaska. Uses the Food Bank regularly as a low-cost food source
5. Develops orders for food and related items and shops as necessary, maintaining all purchases within budgetary constraints
6. Becomes trained in USDA processes for the Older Alaskans Program, providing menus in accordance with nutritional requirements of the USDA and documenting number of clients served daily; files monthly and/or quarterly reports in timely fashion
7. Ensures policies and procedures relating to dietary services are implemented; interprets and enforces facility rules and policies
8. Serves on the SAFE Center safety committee; attends and contributes to various committees as assigned
9. Participates in development of long-range plans and applicable budgets
10. Directs food services staff to respond to needs of various participating programs, including age-specific needs as appropriate
11. Establishes and keeps current food services departmental policies and procedures, as well as other reference materials to be used by food services staff in providing optimal nutrition services
12. Develops work assignments with Lead Cook for all food service department personnel
13. Ensures food services personnel are properly trained in job duties, including sanitation and safety
14. Ensures in-service training for food services staff is given on a quarterly basis or more frequently if needed
15. Oversees scheduling and back-up coverage for food services personnel
16. Responsible for maintaining sanitation and proper temperature as well as correct food handling techniques
17. Retains responsibility for discipline of food service employees; conducts performance reviews, issues warnings and suspension notices as appropriate
18. Maintains current awareness of new legislation and regulations influencing the practice or standards of dietary services
19. Performs other duties as necessary for the successful operation of the program
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Speaking, listening, sitting, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, climbing and balancing, and walking are required. Manual dexterity necessary to prepare food, write and operate keypads and keyboards. Visual and hearing acuity at or corrected to normal range is required to communicate by telephone and in person with others. Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds. Ability to operate a motor vehicle in daylight, darkness, and in inclement weather conditions.

ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a well-lit, heated, and ventilated environment, although water and humidity are constant due to dish washing and food preparation. Exposure to slippery floors and hot surfaces will be present. Noise level is generally low; equipment noises generally will be intermittent. Exposure to extreme weather conditions is not a requirement of this position.
Software-related Skills
Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook familiarity preferred. Working knowledge of integrated database applications and ability to use new software programs with basic training.
Language Skills
Must be able to understand, follow and give both written and oral instructions and be comfortable working with diverse individuals in face-to-face contact and over the telephone. The employee must be able to use speech and hearing for ordinary and telephone conversation.
Mathematical Skills
Must be able to perform simple calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and apply concepts such as ratios and percentages in practical situations.
Performance Skills
Must be punctual, organized, self-motivated, flexible, and possess a desire to learn and assist those he/she interacts with.

Must complete Mission the online course for this area and pass the Background Checks required by The Salvation Army for employment.
