The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1946, is dedicated to training future veterinarians, providing services to animal owners and veterinarians, and conducting investigations to improve the health of animals as well as people. Position Summary
This position is responsible for organizing research projects and laboratory operations for departmental faculty, students, staff, and other trainees. Work with departmental administration to manage laboratory and project budgets and records. Collect, curate, analyze, and interpret data from experimental and field studies. Assist with the development and application of experimental protocols that address an assigned scientific question. Execute laboratory procedures currently used in bacteriology, immunology and molecular biology such as antimicrobial susceptibility testing, DNA/ RNA isolation, PCR, real time PCR, cloning, gel electrophoresis, ELISA, Northern and Western Blotting, cell culture, flow cytometry, etc. This position is also responsible for the oversight of the quality of research conducted by post docs, gradate, and undergraduate students. Writes and contributes to manuscript and report preparation, research presentations to stakeholders, and grant writing.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Experience and knowledge of the standards needed to maintain a productive and collaborative laboratory and research unit.
  • Possess knowledge of basic laboratory techniques and have willingness and aptitude to learn additional techniques.
  • Organizational skills including record keeping, anticipation of logistics needs, and ability to plan, organize, and oversee research projects.
  • Detect and solve problems in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Strong communication skills are a must in order to facilitate the research program that is comprised of a wide array of research personnel.
  • Possess the highest levels of scientific ethics.
  • Above average competence with basic computer programs and accounting.

  • Maintains records, organizes and transmits the data and reports required for the lab to function within State, Federal, and University parameters for chemical, biological, radiological and infectious agent safety policies.
  • Conducts and ensures all personnel working in the laboratory have appropriate training and adhere to proper safety and lab protocols, document training according to UGA/USG requirements.
  • Train research personnel in the lab including graduate students, faculty, research professionals and students on our laboratory standard operating procedures.
  • Oversee student workers supporting the department's research program.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Orders lab materials and reagents in a cost-effective, efficient and timely manner with appropriate record keeping.
  • Coordination of multi-faculty use of laboratory supplies, animals, equipment and available personnel.
  • Ensures multiple primary investigators have access to resources required to execute research protocols.
  • Provides assistance in scheduling to maximize efficiency in use of the equipment, animals, facilities and personnel of the laboratory.
  • Storage and organization of biological samples, with appropriate record keeping.


Facilities oversight:

  • Oversees equipment and facility service, maintenance and repair.
  • Anticipates equipment, supply, and personnel needs and participate in the purchase of the proper instruments and systems to meet the demands of the laboratory.
  • Ensures completion of lab chores including managing the coordination of junior technician(s).

  • Work with departmental faculty, students, and research staff to manage field and live animal research projects.
  • Organize and attend pre-project meetings to develop necessary protocols, plan project scheduling, and organize supplies, animals and personnel.
  • Develop and keep track of project protocols.
  • Collect, curate, analyze, and interpret data, ensuring all data collected is of the highest quality with rigor and reproducibility.
  • Assist with basic laboratory assays and procedures as requested by PIs and other research staff.
  • This may include sample collection from research animals, basic laboratory assays, shipping and receiving samples, and other tasks to facilitate the team environment of our research program.
  • Assist PIs and research staff with preparation of scientific manuscripts, research presentations, grants, and progress reports.
