Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in Brain Health and Cerebrovascular Care Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute (HHRI)/Department of Neurology Brain Health and Cerebrovascular Care Lab

The Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute (HHRI) invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Brain Health and Cerebrovascular Care Lab, directed by Dr. Behnam Sabayan. Our lab focuses on advancing preventive neurology and cerebrovascular care, with an emphasis on health equity and the impact of vascular risk factors on brain aging and cognitive decline.

Position Overview

The fellow will join a vibrant research environment within Minnesota's largest safety-net healthcare system, Hennepin Healthcare. This is a 2-3-year, on-site position (with hybrid flexibility) contingent on annual progress. The position offers structured mentorship to prepare the fellow for an independent research career, including guidance on grant writing, publishing, and leadership in collaborative research.

Duties and Responsibilities



  • Design and conduct research studies in collaboration with senior investigators.
  • Analyze quantitative and/or qualitative data using appropriate statistical methods.
  • Review and synthesize scientific literature to develop meta-analyses and support ongoing research.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Contribute to grant applications and research dissemination efforts.
  • Present research findings at scientific conferences and internal meetings.
  • Maintain clear and accurate records of research activities and datasets.
  • Navigate IRB processes, including protocol writing and application submission.


Qualifications



  • Doctoral degree (PhD, MD, MD/PhD or equivalent) in neurology, clinical neuroscience, epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, or a related field.
  • At least two first-author publications in a peer-reviewed journal relevant to the field.
  • Experience with IRB processes, including writing and submitting applications.
  • Strong analytical and scientific writing skills.
  • Highly motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work both independently and in a team setting.
  • Commitment to a career in brain health, cerebrovascular care, and/or preventive neurology.
  • Knowledge of human subjects' research regulations and HIPAA compliance.


Visa note: This position does not support J-1 visa sponsorship. Candidates participating in an Optional Practical Training (OPT) program is highly desirable though H1B sponsorship may be considered for highly qualified applicants currently residing in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications



  • Proficiency in statistical programming (R, SAS, Stata, or Python) and familiarity with advanced statistical methods.
  • Experience working with large datasets and cohort studies, preferably EHR, or multi-site clinical research data.


Mentorship and Career Development

As Principal Investigator, Dr. Sabayan is committed to mentoring the fellow in grant writing, manuscript preparation, and project leadership, with the goal of supporting their transition to an independent research career.

Compensation Salary will be commensurate with NIH post-doctoral guidelines. A travel allowance for conferences and professional development will be provided.
