Metra's Engineering Department is staffed with over 800 employees who work tirelessly applying technology and engineering principles in the design, construction, operation, and management of our network of infrastructure, facilities, and equipment so that customers can enjoy a safe, comfortable, economical, and dependable transit experience.

Reporting to the Director, Civil/Structural Design, the Civil Engineer 2 / Track Design Lead will oversee the production of design documents for projects that include rail infrastructure including non-station facilities, rail maintenance shops, rail yards, and towers. The position will ensure compliance with applicable building codes and design criteria established for rail infrastructure projects. The position will be responsible for coordination with the Metra stakeholder departments as well as external railroads.

Primary duties include:

  • Evaluate and provide recommendations concerning consultant construction designs and specifications on construction projects to ensure feasibility and compliance with Metra's guidelines, funding requirements, and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with management to resolve technical developments involving design plans, scheduling conflicts, and staffing that involve other Metra departments or outside agencies
  • Ensure all documentation confirming projects meet quality control and quality assurance guidelines as set forth in the Consultant Design Quality Management Plan is complete.
  • Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Employees may perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.

Requirements
  1. Must have a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited school.
  2. In addition to #1, must have four (4) years of civil engineering experience preferably in the railroad or transportation industry.
  3. Good knowledge of civil engineering design and construction principles, methods, and standards as they relate to railroad and road design.
  4. Good knowledge of materials, techniques, and components of railroad and road design.
  5. Strong critical thinking and organization skills.
  6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  7. Good negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  8. Considerable skill preparing underground utility design plans and profiles for roadways, railroads, and water and sewer systems.
  9. Considerable skill reading detailed engineering drawings and interpreting engineering specifications.
  10. Intermediate skill using database system applications.
  11. Intermediate skill using Microstation and AutoCAD systems.
  12. Intermediate skill using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  13. Ability to organize, analyze, interpret, and evaluate complex engineering problems and apply engineering knowledge to provide practical and cost effective solutions.
  14. Ability to work as a team member or independently on major projects.
  15. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  16. Hearing/Visual acuity, far/near, depth perception, field of vision, color vision.
  17. Ability to lift and move up to 20 pounds.
  18. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  19. Must be willing to travel within Metra's 6-county region.

Preferences:

Professional Engineering License preferred
