Responsibilities

Job Summary
The nurse practitioner (NP) works collaboratively with members of the healthcare team to provide care appropriate to the age of the oncology patients served. The NP participates in H & P, treatment selection, consenting on clinical trials, eligibility screening, and ongoing management of patients' symptoms due to disease and/or treatment. As sub-investigator, the NP takes an active role in the in assessment, planning, implementation, treatment, and evaluation of oncology patients, predominately in the outpatient setting, participating in clinical research studies. The position is associated with a significant level of autonomy; therefore, the individual must be highly motivated and able to work independently. As an advanced practice nurse (APN) demonstrates leadership as a provider, educator, mentor and researcher. The APN adheres to and functions within the scope of practice defined by the Arizona Board of Nursing and Honor Health privileges.
Essential Functions
  • As a provider, the NP performs/collaborates with physicians to perform histories and physicals, order and interpret diagnostic studies, prescribe medications and treatments, consult ancillary departments and other specialists, and provide a smooth transition between various levels of care. Reviews patient medical records, tests and study results to make recommendations for treatment options
  • Assists the Clinical Trials Medical Director with identification of medical and research staffing needs, provision of oversight of staff and ongoing research activities, adherence to all institutional and regulatory guidelines, appropriate training of clinical research staff, and general oversight of patient care.
  • Provides call coverage for clinical trials program as needed.
  • Participation in national and international meetings to share results of ongoing and completed research studies; service as an expert clinical researcher in the oncology area and sharing this expertise with other community and academic physicians and clinical research staff.
  • As an educator, the NP promotes nursing staff development by serving as a resource for clinical skill development, critical thinking skills, discharge planning, and effective nurse-physician-client-family communication skills.
  • As a mentor, the NP advances the role of nurses, fellows and more junior faculty by promoting their direct involvement in decisions that guide patient-family centered care, while ensuring the standards of the profession and specialty are maintained.
  • Participates in regular meetings with investigators, staff, sponsors, and protocol teleconference calls as required for conduct of research studies.

  • Master's Degree MS, MN or MSN - Required
Experience
  • Oncology Clinical Research - Preferred
  • Other Oncology Nursing - Required
Licenses and Certifications
  • Nursing\NP - Nurse Practioner Valid Arizona Licensure With Prescriptive Authority DEA Licensure Upon Hire - Required
  • Nursing\AOCNP - Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner Oncology Certification; ACNP, ANP or FNP Upon Hire - Required
  • Nursing\RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure And/Or Compact State Licensure Specialty board certification from approved national certifying agency; American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), or American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Upon Hire - Required
  • Nursing\APNPBC - Advanced Prac Np Valid AZ NP license with prescriptive authority Upon Hire - Required
