At General Dynamics Electric Boat, we offer college students an unparalleled opportunity to gain hands-on engineering experience in the defense industry. Our Co-op Program provides practical exposure in a mission-critical environment, working alongside expert engineers to develop and support the next generation of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines.

As a Co-op Trainee, you'll collaborate with experienced professionals across departments and gain valuable insights into innovative programs like the Columbia Class design and enhancements to the Virginia Class submarines. You'll apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges, grow your engineering skill set, and contribute to critical national security efforts.

Participants may be placed in one of several departments, including but not limited to:

    Platform Systems Engineering
  • Software Engineering
  • Naval Architecture (Hydrodynamics, Hydrostatics, & Weights)
  • Fluid Systems (Air, Water, Hydraulic, HVAC, etc.)
  • Combat Systems Engineering
  • Propulsion Plant (Fluid Systems, Structures, Arrangements, Electrical)
  • Internal & External Structures
  • Ship Signatures
  • Solid Mechanics
  • Construction Support
  • Pipe Stress, CFD, and Shielding Analysis
  • Life Cycle Engineering
  • Test Engineering

Location: Electric Boat locations in CT or RI

Duration: Full-time | 4-6 months | Spring 2026 Semester

On-site only | U.S. Citizenship required

Participation in this program is in lieu of a course load / academic class schedule.

Qualifications

Applicants should have completed a minimum of one year of college working toward a Bachelor or Master's of Science degree in: Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, Marine/Ocean Engineering, Systems Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Naval Architecture/Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Industrial Engineering or Computer Science. Other relevant engineering and STEM degrees are encouraged to apply.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a medically supervised drug screen, background check, with potential for DoD Investigation to earn clearance.
  • Must be enrolled full-time at a college or university
  • Applicants must only apply if they are looking for a full time co-op for 4 - 6 months in Spring of 2026, in lieu of a course load / academic class schedule.
  • Selected candidates will be responsible for establishing housing and reliable transportation for the duration of their intern assignment.
