Job Description Summary:
The Textile Museum was established in 1925 by collector and connoisseur George Hewitt Myers to expand public knowledge and appreciation-locally, nationally, and internationally-of the artistic merits and cultural importance of the world's textiles through scholarship, exhibitions, and educational programs. Today, its collections represent five millennia and five continents, including cultures from the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and the Indigenous peoples of the Americas. The 20,000-volume Arthur D. Jenkins Library of Textile Arts ( ADJL) is one of the world's foremost resources for the study of textiles.
This noncirculating research library at The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum is open to the public, and offers materials on textile and rug history, costume and fashion history and on textile-making techniques. The ADJL collection includes monographs, serials, ephemera, auction catalogs, visual resources, and media. The ADJL advances the mission, vision and goals of the Museum and promotes the educational mission of the George Washington University and located at the Foggy Bottom Campus of the George Washington University.
Job Description:
The Library Associate is responsible for the effective management of day-to-day operations the Arthur D. Jenkins Library ( ADJL). This role focuses on enhancing the experience of Museum staff, GWU community, scholars, and members of the public by managing communication and content related to ADJL. Duties are performed per ADJL's mission to foster and facilitate the creation of textile arts knowledge by collecting and making accessible resources on the cultural, social, political, technical, and economic importance of textiles in human history. Responsibilities include overseeing daily activities of the ADJL, collection management, archives management, resource description, reference, promotion, and outreach. The librarian is a full-time in-person employee who reports to the Chief Curator.
Responsibilities:

  • Support the development of the ADJL's strategic goals, policies, long-range plans, mission, and other initiatives with the chief curator and ADJL library committee, and implement them with the educational mission of the George Washington University while adhering to best practices
  • Track all ADJL expenditures to ensure all essential services are provided
  • Maintain ADJL recordkeeping procedures and prepare reports related to library activities for the Museum administration
  • Recruit, train, and oversee ADJL volunteers, interns, and student assistants.
  • Provide in-person, online, and telephone reference assistance to the Museum staff, GWU community, scholars, and members of the public; provide library orientation and assistance to GWU classes and other academic entities
  • In collaboration with the chief curator and ADJ Library committee plan for future development of the collection.
  • Maintain and perform collections management policy and procedures in line with the missions of the Museum and GWU
  • Assist the chief curator, ADJ Library committee, and digital assets manager, in developing a roadmap for digitization of the ADJL's print and archival collections; establish and maintain digital repositories and archives; support the establishment and maintenance of digital repositories and archives
  • Collaborate with the George Washington University Libraries and Academic Innovation (GWLAI) and departments and as well as other research and academic libraries
  • In collaboration with the chief curator, the ADJ Library committee, develop and execute strategies to strengthen the ADJL's scholarly role and stature as one of the top textile history libraries in North America
  • Contribute to library fundraising efforts by working with the development department to develop proposals, identify funding sources, and engage with donors/potential donors and promote a positive image of the ADJL.
  • Coordinate and mount the annual Textile Research Day for students and recent graduates who have engaged in textile studies or practice
  • Represent the library in the academic community and maintain an active professional role and visibility by engaging in collegial exchange and dialogue



This position may include an opportunity to serve as the instructor of record for a university course during normal business hours. The opportunity shall be mutually agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.

This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement ( CBA), which governs wages, benefits, and working conditions.
Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • MLIS degree from ALA-accredited program is preferred
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong computer and software skills, including the use of content management software is desired
  • Highly motivated, cooperative, and flexible individual willing to strive for excellence in a dynamic museum environment
  • Awareness of administrative and technical services practices in special libraries
  • Copy cataloging experience
  • Experience with library cataloging tools, such as MARC, OCLC Client, web-based WorldCat, or Ex Libris Alma is preferred
  • Experience in an art library or museum library
  • Previous original cataloging experience or coursework
  • Experience with library collections development is desired
  • Experience with archives management or coursework is preferred
  • Copy editing or editing experience for art publications is desired

Hiring Range $53,719.00
