Work Schedule

Work Schedule: The Maricopa Community Colleges Police Department operates 24 hours per day, seven (7) days per week, 365 days per year. Schedules include rotating shift work, nights, weekends, holidays, or otherwise non-standard work schedules. Due to the nature of the work performed, mandatory overtime, which may be extensive in quantity or frequency, is required to perform the essential functions of this classification. Incumbents must be flexible with scheduling to accommodate fluctuating workloads and overtime requirements. Overtime may include extended shift work with advanced or short notice, or may occur on unscheduled work days. On-call may also be required to perform the essential functions of this classification.

The Maricopa Community Colleges Police Department is seeking a motivational and effective leader for Police Communications Supervisor. This opportunity is a first-line supervisor for the District Police Communications & Records Bureau. The supervisor will oversee day to day operations of the MCCCD Police Communications Center on an assigned shift and is charged with supervising, training, and evaluating assigned Communications Specialists. This opportunity is also responsible for maintaining a functional working knowledge of the District Police Communications & Records Bureau.

Essential Functions

35% - Supervises full-time regular staff within the District Police Emergency Communications Center:
  • Plans, organizes, assigns, supervises, reviews and evaluates the work of staff; participates in hiring, discipline and termination activities
  • Identifies staff training needs and opportunities; provides staff training and mentoring
  • Investigates and resolves complaints and issues


30% - Plans, prioritizes and oversees the delivery of emergency communications and dispatch functions:
  • Performs communications support including responding to calls, performing dispatch and monitoring security
  • Organizes and/or maintains records and logs according to established procedures
  • Keeps assigned tools and/or equipment in clean and safe working condition
  • Adheres to and ensures compliance with applicable workplace safety policies, procedures and practices


25% - Makes recommendations for improved processes and procedures:
  • Provides assistance with the most complicated public safety work of those supervised
  • Develops, recommends and implements operating policies, practices and work standards
  • Ensures assigned employees are in compliance with state and federal laws pertaining to the use of and dissemination of information obtained through the Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) and the Arizona Criminal Justice Information System (ACJIS)


10% - May occasionally drive a MCCCD vehicle to deliver or pick up supplies, equipment, paperwork, evidence, or other materials; other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and three (3) years of work experience in a police communications environment, which includes experience performing the work of a police or emergency communications dispatcher for a municipal organization or an organization contracted to provide police dispatch services for a municipal organization.

There is no substitution or equivalency allowable for the High School Diploma or GED or for the three (3) years of required experience.

Desired Qualifications
  1. Two (2) or more years prior law enforcement dispatch supervisory experience
  2. Police Records Management System (RMS) experience
  3. Experience within a police records unit
  4. Experience within a police property & evidence unit
  5. Police Records Management System (RMS) experience


Special Working Conditions

ADA AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Positions in this class typically require: typing, empathy, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Working Conditions: Work is routinely performed in an indoor office environment utilizing phone and radio communications equipment, along with various computer systems for extended time periods.

Additional Requirements

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:

Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Arizona Driver License (Class D) with an initial and ongoing driving record to the satisfaction of MCCCD.

Must obtain Arizona Criminal Justice Information System (ACJIS) Terminal Operator Certification (TOC) - Level C from the Arizona Department of Public Safety within six (6) months of hire.

Once obtained, must maintain a valid ACJIS Terminal Operator Certification (TOC) - Level C from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, which includes recertification every two (2) years or on another schedule required to maintain such certification.

Background Check: Because of the confidential and sensitive nature of the information handled, successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation, which may include, but is not limited to, polygraph testing, fingerprinting, and a psychological examination to the initial and ongoing satisfaction of MCCCD is required.

Substance Abuse Testing: Because of the confidential and sensitive nature of the information handled, positions within this classification are subject to pre-employment, ongoing/random, and/or incident-based alcohol, drug, and/or controlled substance testing in compliance with any applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

Typing Speed: A minimum typing speed of 35 net words per minute is required.
