Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $65,600 - $72,500/yr.

About the Job

Under the direction of the Housing Custodial Services Manager, the Housing Custodial Supervisor directly manages all phases of the Housing custodial operations across all shifts to ensure campus facilities are kept clean and sanitary by providing direction and guidance to Housing Custodial staff. Analyzes and resolves problems on site and administers and follows policies and contract agreements as required.

Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to ensure accountability and stewardship of campus operational resources such as equipment, cleaning, and chemical supplies to comply with departmental goals and objectives.

Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and determines best practices to meet goals. The Housing Custodial Supervisor recommends changes to unit or sub-unit policies that will increase productivity or assist in budgetary goals.

As a operational supervisor, this position will be expected to operate University vehicles as a core function of this position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee employees' daily activities by providing direction, guidance, and supervision to maintain an orderly, safe, clean and efficient operation. Maintains inventory pars of equipment and supplies, as well as ensures all equipment is properly cleaned and stored in a secure location at the end of shift. Provides services for Housing special events. Submits bi-weekly time sheets to ensure payroll deadlines are met. Develops work standards and assignments for Housing custodial operations. Hires, trains, promotes, evaluates, and disciplines custodial employees. Maintains performance and attendance records and other personnel files. Reduces risk and work-related injuries. Inspects all housing - dining buildings to ensure areas are clean and meet university service level standards set by management. Works effectively with the campus community and team members to accomplish work assignments to ensure assigned tasks are completed in a timely manner with the highest quality and efficiency.
  • Oversees with thorough knowledge of policies and procedures, the planning, organization, and direction of Housing custodial operations. Provides and encourages positive examples of leadership and teamwork among staff and promotes quality service to the campus community. Regularly coordinates and conducts staff meetings and training sessions. Maintains job proficiency and knowledge through appropriate training courses, seminars, publications, and contacts with others in the trade. Tests cleaning materials, equipment, and building supplies with a focus on "Green Cleaning" and "Sustainability" campus programs. Improves efficiency and contributes to water and energy saving programs. Supports recycling program coordinating collection and monitoring inside campus Housing buildings. Is well versed and follows APPA protocols.
  • Enforces safety guidelines for Blood Borne Illnesses, biohazard materials from human waste, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), ladder safety, hand safety, back safety, VIRT (Violent Intruder Alert Training) and general awareness of safety guidelines to protect university employees and assets. Promptly reports accidents on the job, preparing and submitting incident reports when needed, as well as, contacting appropriate departments to insure prompt handling of an injury related to worker compensation.
  • Enforces proper handling of equipment, chemicals and cleaning supplies. Knowledge of correct chemical use and mixture. Maintains proper inventory needs and purchase inventory. Maintains monthly records of equipment maintenance. Conduct monthly inventory of chemicals and cleaning materials. Submits bi-weekly timesheets to ensure payroll deadlines are met.
  • Assists in the budgets for custodial operations. In collaboration with the Custodial Manager, collaborates to develop and monitor operational and budget processes, and staff FTE.
  • Other duties as assigned. Under extenuating circumstances, the Housing Custodial Supervisor may be asked to assist with cleanup projects or other urgent and important projects to maintain University cleanliness and safety standards. Will be expected to operate University vehicles in support of operations as needed.
Qualifications

EDUCATION and REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree and 3 years of related experience OR,
  • 7 years equivalent of work experience which have led to the development of the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position in replacement of a bachelors degree.
  • Bloodborne pathogens and sharps disposal training.
  • Drivers License Required.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with peers, employees, supervisor, and department/UC staff in a courteous and professional manner. Verbal and written communication skills in the English language, active listening, flexibility, critical thinking, multi-tasking, and time management.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct cleaning schedules and manage all aspects of the development of the custodial crew.
  • Knowledge of correct chemical use and mixture.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and/or multiple shifts.
  • Working knowledge in custodial and housekeeping services.
  • Working knowledge of and the ability for decision making, reasoning, developing original ideas to solve problems, performing operations analysis, and performing quality control analysis.
  • Working knowledge and skill in effective interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other personnel.
  • Basic computer application skills.
  • Effectively communicates orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of general custodial duties.
  • Must have excellent communication and presentation skills when dealing with the campus community or outside clients.
  • Ability to multitask and handle more than one project at a time.
  • Ability to promptly report accidents on the job, preparing and submitting accident reports.
