The Chief Medical Officer has the executive responsibility for managing the Hospital's support functions for Medical Staff responsibilities. This position is intended to be a full-time administrative position. The principal responsibilities will be to provide leadership to and facilitate the activities of Medical Staff Services, Quality & Case Management, Risk Management, Medical Records and Medical Education. The individual will assume a facilitative role to assist the Chief of Staff, its officers, and department chairmen in carrying out their responsibilities. This role will serve as an advocate for the medical staff, while concurrently serving as a key member of the Executive Management Team, helping to further build relationships between the hospital and its medical staff. This position does not replace or usurp the authority of the Chief of Staff, the Medical Staff department or committees.

Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, with 431 licensed patient beds, is the largest hospital serving the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys and offers state of-the-art technology and high quality, compassionate care in a variety of medical specialties. The medical center has an active medical staff of more than 650 physicians and employs more than 2,300 staff. The Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, which opened in early 2010, is the largest, most comprehensive cancer center in the San Fernando and surrounding valleys.

Essential Functions



  • Provide leadership direction for the Medical Staff and develop/implements strategic plans to achieve the goals of the function.
  • To provide leadership direction and supervision of the Medical Staff Office and other functional areas as assigned.
  • To provide support to the Chief Executive in carrying out their responsibilities. In addition, staff support will also be provided to the department and committee chairpersons in carrying out their responsibilities.
  • To serve in an advisory and communication role to the Chief Executive on medical-administrative matters.
  • To provide leadership to the clinical quality enhancement function of the Hospital and assist appropriate Hospital and Medical Staff departments and committees in maintaining and improving the quality of medical programs.
  • To facilitate communication and coordination of the Hospital's professional departments and their respective medical directors in order to improve patient care activities.
  • To be attentive to the needs and requests of the Medical Staff, and to facilitate the Hospital's response to such.
  • To facilitate the cooperation and communication of the Medical Staff departments and the nursing division.
  • To constantly search for opportunities to improve clinical integration by and between PSJMC and Health System entities.
  • Lead Quality initiatives to improve the quality of our providers.
  • Report to and receive formal authority from the Chief Executive.
  • Report monthly to the Medical Executive Committee on matters of interest to the Medical Staff and issues related to their job responsibilities.
  • Serve as an Ex-officio non-voting member of the Medical Executive Committee, Quality Improvement and Credentials committees and such other committees as appropriate.
