This position receives shipments of library materials and preparing materials for circulation. Unpacks shipments and addresses problems or discrepancies. Orders the flow of materials based on timeliness and departmental capacity. Affixes labels to cataloged library materials; searches for matching records using the integrated library system; enters or verifies appropriate item data. Performs circulation duties, including sorting materials from delivery and making branch assignments for redistribution. Sorts and packs outgoing materials appropriately. Performs other duties as may be assigned to further the goals and objectives of Fairfax County Public Library. Works under the direction of the Library Receiving Supervisor.

Salary: The selected applicant's starting hourly rate will be in the minimum to midpoint range ($18.8804 - $25.1738) and will not exceed the mid-point of the advertised compensation range. (Note: Compensation rules apply per Fairfax County personnel regulations for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees)
Schedule: Occasional overtime may be required.

Illustrative Duties

- Unloads/loads equipment, supplies and parts manually using carts, dollies, hand trucks, hoists, forklifts, conveyors and motorized and non-motorized equipment;
- Unpacks and organizes items for storage;
- Stores, shelves, stows and arranges items in storage areas;
- Conducts physical inventory of items received;
- Inspects the condition of shipments to ensure conformance to specifications and quantities ordered;
- Reports results, discrepancies, damaged items and shortage or overage shipments to supervisor for corrective action;
- Assist with receiving and shipping orders;
- Delivers and/or ships materials and supplies;
- Performs basic data entry for record keeping and reporting functions, i.e., entering receipts and issues;

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to")
high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus one years of warehouse experience using material handling and equipment performing inventory tasks.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- One or more years of warehouse and material handling experience performing inventory tasks.
- Experience working in a physically demanding environment.
- Ability to use a computer to input and retrieve information; strong data entry experience with the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Detail oriented.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to apply pressure with a folding tool. Ability to lift boxes, books and materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to load and unload materials of various sizes and weights from pallets, bins, and carts; frequent bending and stretching. Ability to open and handle library materials. Ability to operate electric lift. Ability to push/pull loaded wheeled bins weighting up to 300 pounds across carpeted floors requiring 30-40 pounds of initial (starting) force, and a sustained force of 15-20 pounds after initial acceleration. Ability to push/pull wheeled book carts. Strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks including lifting, stooping, bending, and reaching. Physical requirements are applicable to all duties. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
