Current Assignment:
The purpose of this announcement is to establish an eligibility pool that will last for twelve (12) months for future vacancies.

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District is currently seeking qualified candidates for the DMU Engineer position. This classification will be responsible for operating a Diesel passenger train in accordance with established safety and operating rules and procedures. DMU Engineers are responsible for passenger safety, communicating with passengers and co-workers via public address systems and radios; monitoring and troubleshooting electrical/mechanical train equipment, completing standard written reports, and performing other related duties as necessary. In addition, DMU Engineers must maintain and upgrade knowledge and skills related to train operation procedures.

Examples of Duties

  1. Operates DMU revenue and non-revenue rail vehicles in accordance within established rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

  2. Transports passengers in a safe manner according to the train schedule and other service requirements.
  3. Responsible for reviewing and understanding all wayside and cab signals, track warrants and bulletins.
  4. Responsible for operating the train in a safe manner by applying knowledge of territory, including terrain, grades, and curves in order to promote ride quality.
  5. Responsible for inspecting DMUs before and after run for operational readiness.
  6. Diagnoses malfunctions and performs minor maintenance and servicing activities.
  7. Responsible for troubleshooting mechanical issues as necessary.
  8. Communicates with train dispatchers, supervisors, and other personnel by radio to exchange information and receive instructions including stops, delays, oncoming trains, or other unusual conditions.
  9. Responsible for all onboard customer communication.
  10. Corresponds with management and customers in the event of emergencies and functions as the initial on-scene incident coordinator in the event of emergencies, and coordinates with security and emergency personnel, including BART.
  11. Observes radio and hand signals in yard or in cab and operates train in accordance with railroad rules and regulations.
  12. Performs train cleaning activities as necessary.
  13. Responsible for yard duties such as fueling, washing, and sanding.
  14. Responsible for moving revenue and non-revenue vehicles through the yard and maintenance facility as directed by dispatch or other District personnel.
  15. May be required to throw switches or perform other activities involving switch operations.
  16. Notifies proper authorities and prepares reports to explain unusual occurrences, accidents, or delays.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Possessionofahighschooldiploma,GEDorrecognized equivalent.

Experience:
Five (5) years verifiable experience in railroad or rail transit operations, maintenance, or related experience. Experience as a Railroad or Rail Transit Dispatcher, Train Controller, Road Foreman or Train Master preferred.

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment and bi-annual physical examination meeting the Class B licensing requirements established by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
  • Must be able to obtain Class One (1) DMU engineer certification within the initial probationary period
  • Must retain DMU engineer certification
  • Must be available for on-call responsibility for vehicle maintenance related problems
  • Must meet vision and color recognition requirements for signal identification and repair
  • Demonstrates clear, effective oral, written and verbal communication skills in English in order to communicate through radio systems and write in daily logs
  • Must be willing to work off-hours shifts, holidays and weekends
