Senior Estimator Job Description

The Senior Estimator is a critical position being responsible for acquiring solicitations from various sources, gathering bid documentation, and evaluating specifications, drawings and contractual documents. This role requires the ability to properly analyze all data to estimate the time, money, materials, and labor required to successfully bid work that support company goals. The Estimator collaborates closely with all management positions, including team members, from customer service, project management and engineering, manufacturing, software engineering, and finance to ensure meet all criteria are met as required by company objectives.

A Senior Estimator guides the estimating of project costs, manages the bidding process, analyzes bid documents, and assists in the development of detailed cost estimates, project strategy, and coordination with management and vendors.

This role demands leadership, strong communication skills and excellent attention to detail. The Senior Estimator must be able to negotiate with a range of professionals, make accurate time and cost estimates, and resolve issues as they arise, and actively contribute to the planning, development, negotiation, and execution of project contracts.

Responsibilities:



  • Proactively research available documents and analyzing project specifications.
  • Managing pre-qualification and pre-bid submissions.
  • Prepare estimates aligned with project goals by breaking down project elements, estimating costs, determining project duration, setting work hours, sequencing tasks, obtaining materials and negotiating with vendors and subcontractors.
  • Mentor estimating team, providing guidance and training to consistency, accuracy, and quality in estimates, leveraging experience.
  • Guiding teams through the company's "Gate" approval processes.
  • Interacting with corporate management in all positions on project potential, financial risk & value, contractual assessment, and opportunity strategy.
  • Ensuring that all relevant documents and budgets are submitted before a bid deadline.
  • Identify potential risks and develop contingency plans related to cost and project execution.
  • Provide regular status reports to management and keeping clients updated on the project milestones.
  • Formulate and maintain contingency plans, effectively managing risks that might impact cost and time estimates.
  • Conduct post-project audits to collect actual data versus estimated data and analyze assumptions and process for future improvement.



Skills and Requirements:



  • Extensive experience and/or formal training as an estimator in construction or related field. (Note: A bachelor's degree in construction or related discipline is helpful but not required if equivalent knowledge is demonstrated through experience.)


  • Exceptional time management, multitasking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong management and negotiation skills.
  • Self-motivated, punctual & detail oriented.
  • Excellent teamwork and business ethics.
  • Ability to collaborate with other project teams and management at all levels.
  • Ability to encourage growth in others, both personally and professionally.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex data, identify potential risks, and develop effective solutions.
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and manage estimating efforts with consistency and accuracy.
  • Skilled in research, proposal writing, and oral presentation.
  • Well-versed in current standards and best practices.
  • Ability to perform detailed estimate reviews and clearly communicate findings.
  • Strong mentoring capabilities and leadership potential.
  • Proficient with estimating software and Microsoft Office tools.


Ability to travel and perform site visits as necessary
