Organizational Unit Overview
The Department of Human Development and Family Science is one of eight units in the College of Health and Human Performance. It has approximately 550 full-time students and 120 licensure-only students enrolled in one of four undergraduate programs: family and community services, birth-kindergarten teacher education, family and consumer sciences education, and child life. An additional 85 students are enrolled in one of three master's programs: human development and family science, birth-kindergarten teacher education, marriage and family therapy, or a Ph.D. program in medical family therapy. The department houses the Nancy W. Darden Child Development Center, the Redditt House: Medical Family Therapy Research Academy, and the ECU Family Therapy Clinic. The Medical Family Therapy program serves as the first of its kind in the nation and the MFT program was the first to be Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education ( COAMFTE) accredited in the state of North Carolina. Both programs hold a strong standing with the COAMFTE.
Job Duties
The primary purpose of this position is to oversee and manage the operations of the Family Therapy Clinic, ensuring its financial stability, compliance with policies, and effectiveness in training student therapists. Responsibilities include direct client intake and records management, supervising staff and students, maintaining a personal therapy caseload, facilitating community outreach and marketing efforts, managing facilities, and serving as a liaison between the clinic and faculty to support quality improvement and communication.

Clinic Operations 55%:
Direct and approve client intakes; oversee and manage client records; assume financial management of clinic ensuring consistent funding; oversee clinic public relations; promote cooperative community programming; respond to records requests; ensure adherence to policies and procedures established by North Carolina, East Carolina University, College of Health and Human Performance, and Department of Human Development and Family Science Standards, COAMFTE Accreditation Standards, and the ECU Family Therapy Program and Clinic; collect and disseminate quality improvement and outcome data to stakeholders; provide regular updates to MFT faculty regarding clinic operations; engage in marketing activities to maintain sufficient client load; create and maintain the clinic record-keeping systems for clinical and research data; gather and disseminate quality improvement data and outcomes data to stakeholders ( ECU, clients, community).
Facilities Management 5%:
Oversee physical operations of the Family Therapy Clinic and Redditt House Research Academy including maintaining operations of Occularis (recording system), Time2Track (student clinical hours record keeping system) and TheraNest (Electronic Health Record); Maintain access (grant/remove) for clinic employees, therapists, or interns including building access, physical key access, mailbox access, relevant TEAMS sites, TheraNest, RedCap ( CAT team only), and MFT email ( CAT team only).
Supervision and Training 10%:
Facilitate the transition of the second year MFT students to student therapists in the clinic including the transition of client caseloads; training of MedFT PhD students on clinic procedures, conduct professionalism evaluation for student therapists; provide onsite supervision of student therapists as needed; supervise administrative assistant and clinic interns/assistants; provide updates and training to faculty on clinic processes as needed.
Therapy Services 25%:
Maintain a caseload of about 8-10 clients per week
Clinic Outreach 5%:
Engage and collaborate in the community; promote the clinic and its services at various university and community events such as the annual Family Therapy Clinic Open House, local health fairs, or community festivals and events; participate in the ECU Clinic Consortium and other relevant university groups.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Master's degree from a Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) or related mental health discipline.
  • Valid licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist in the State of North Carolina.
  • At least one year of clinical and administrative experience.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
  • Valid licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist in the State of North Carolina.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) or related mental health discipline from a Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) accredited program.
  • Experience in family therapy clinic administration and related systems including budget management (Banner), electronic health records (TheraNest), student clinical record keeping (Time2Track), data collection (RedCap), communication platforms (Teams) and recording systems (Occularis).
