Position Summary

The Thrift Store Manager is responsible for the day to day operations of the Red Wing thrift store including hiring, scheduling and supervision of staff, merchandising, customer relations and in store promotions. This is a fulltime regular position with a work week expectation of 40 hours per week. This position requires evening and Saturday hours

Wage: $44,000-$45,000

Location: 509 Plum St, Red Wing, MN 55066

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

This job description is not all inclusive. It is intended to identify the essential duties of the position. Other duties, responsibilities and tasks may be assigned by corps officer/administrator.



  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, visitors and clients; respect of others' property and person, professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors, and subordinates.

Staff Supervision:



  • Interview and recommend hiring of qualified candidates for open positions.
  • Assure that all required new hire paperwork is completed by new employees on their first day of work and is submitted to the business office for processing to the HR department at DHQ.
  • Assure that new staff members receive proper orientation and training, including the required Safe From Harm class within their first 30 days of employment.
  • Regularly review staff performance and update training and give guidance as needed.
  • Prepare weekly work schedule for store staff to assure proper staffing levels.
  • Train and supervise sales staff in proper customer service and sales operations.
  • Manage personnel issues in consultation with the Corps Officer.
  • Resolve customers related issues in a professional manner.
  • Perform annual performance reviews with all store staff.
  • Communicate regularly with store staff on store policies, store goals and progress toward goals.
  • Review and approve employee hours and requests for time off.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings.



Store Operations:



  • Maintain a safe and orderly sales floor by making sure merchandise is properly displayed and furniture area is properly straightened and organized.
  • Assist with customer relations, answering customer questions, addressing complaints and concerns.
  • Make sure all furniture is properly priced, and that hold and sold signs are properly used and monitored.
  • Suggest and implement in-store promotions.
  • Get change and help maintain proper funds in cash registers as needed.
  • Make sure proper opening and closing procedures are followed and that all receipts and cash are properly handled and secured.
  • Prepare and assure that daily deposits are prepared and delivered to the bank and that daily sales paperwork is submitted to the bookkeeper.
  • Review and enter daily sales data into the required spreadsheets.
  • Meet regularly with the Corps Officer to review sales and discuss ideas to improve sales and cut costs.
  • Coordinate scheduling of pickups and deliveries maintaining an adequate level of donations to maintain stock.
  • Maintain and coordinate a safe and for receiving and processing of merchandise.
  • Assure proper handling of surplus textiles and surplus merchandise for bulk sale or disposal.
  • Assure that store facility, equipment and vehicles are properly maintained and suggest replacement as needed.
  • Assist cashiers with checkout as needed.
  • Close store following policy and assuring all cash and assets are properly secured.
  • Monitor facility for maintenance and concerns, report concerns to Corps Officer and schedule maintenance as needed.
  • Schedule regular preventative maintenance for HVAC systems in the spring and fall.
  • Other duties as needed to assure the successful operation of the store.



Additional Responsibilities



  • Fill in for absent thrift store staff as needed if no other qualified staff is available.
  • All other duties as assigned.



Qualifications



  • High School Diploma or GED required. Associate's degree preferred.
  • Relevant experience in a thrift store setting with progressive responsibilities.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Ability to work well with customers and colleagues of diverse cultural and socioeconomic groups, respect confidentiality, and ability to work within the ethical and legal parameters of social services.
  • Ability to accept supervision and work with a team of co-workers.
  • Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines, and complete tasks with a minimum of direction.
  • Must have excellent customer service, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to use Salvation Army approved word processing, spreadsheet, data base management, and graphics/desktop publishing software packages.
  • Valid Driver's License. (Must meet the guidelines provided by the State of residence and the automobile insurance provider as pertaining to corps' passenger vans/buses.)
  • Must pass The Salvation Army background checks and meet the MVR driver's qualifications.
  • Willingness to support the philosophy, goals, objectives, and mission of The Salvation Army.
  • It must be understood by the incumbent that the provisions of Safe From Harm will apply upon commencement of employment and also understood that the required Safe From Harm training be satisfactorily completed within the first thirty (30) days of employment.
