Position Highlights |
The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix (COM-P) is seeking a vice chair of Clinical Affairs in the Department of Anesthesiology. This is an opportunity for an outstanding leader with a national reputation as a respected and accomplished clinician, leader, educator and collaborator with a proven track record in helping lead large, complex anesthesiology organizations. The Department of Anesthesiology was formally established on July 14, 2025, with the goal of rapidly developing a residency program and expanding perioperative programs at Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix (B-UMCP). Additional expansion and collaboration with existing Banner Health facilities in Phoenix is also anticipated. The vice chair of Clinical Affairs (VC-CA) will oversee the planning, administration and quality, safety management and regulatory requirements, as well as all quality improvement initiatives across the Department of Anesthesiology. In this role, the VC-CA is also responsible for the Department's compliance with all regulatory, state, federal and Joint Commission requirements, and the development of a comprehensive quality and performance improvement program. The VC-CA reports to the chair of the Department of Anesthesiology for all duties and responsibilities of that position. The VC-CA works closely with departmental division chiefs, B-UMCP Anesthesia chief, and other B-UMCP leaders. The successful candidate will fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member by actively participate in teaching, clinical service and/or scholarly work, and must qualify for an appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. The successful candidate will meet the requirements of a career track faculty according to the College and University guidelines. Duties & Responsibilities |
Provide leadership of faculty, residents, CRNAs, staff and administrators within the Department and collaborate with relevant leaders outside the department, to achieve the key goals outlined below:
- Enhance the quality, safety and value of care provided by departmental members to patients at B-UMCP.
- Ensure that every anesthesia provider in the Department is familiar with the fundamental principles of quality, safety and compliance.
- Collaborate with compliance, quality and risk management offices, as appropriate to resolve complaints and deficiencies.
- Ensure all enterprise, regulatory and accreditation standards and policies are clearly communicated, and that the department fully complies.
- Assist the chair with addressing disciplinary issues and mediating interpersonal conflicts within the Department.
- Ensure that the clinical care provided by departmental members is fully compliant with all billing regulations and policies from departmental, institutional, governmental and other governing entities.
- Optimize care and processes for maximum cost-effectiveness within the constraints of meeting all safety, quality and compliance goals.
- Engender a professional, equitable and collegial clinical work environment where all anesthesia providers are respected and valued.
- Provide oversight of all quality and improvement of the Department. The VC-CA will work with all relevant faculty, residents, CRNAs, staff and administrators both inside and outside the department to develop and enhance structure, content, and process that will improve clinical quality and safety. With the approval of the chair, a quality management program charter will be created to define 1) goals of the program, 2) a set of guiding principles, 3) overarching goals 4) and governance structure.
- Work closely with B-UMCP perioperative leaders to: 1) define and track the most relevant critical care, pain management and perioperative data that will be used to measure and improve clinical quality and safety, 2) provide primary content review of quality and safety related data request/proposals and 3) assist in the creation of tools and technologies that may be utilized to assure that any resultant quality efforts result in sustainable change. This may include, but is not limited to, the creation of dashboards for the purposes of visualizing and tracking data considered critical to patient care, clinical effort and efficiency or fiscal responsibility and productivity at the departmental, division and providers levels.
- Responsible for working with the relevant division chiefs and clinical faculty experts in developing and/or maintaining up to date, relevant, clinical protocols, guidelines and checklists to facilitate the safest and highest quality patient care.
- Work with the residency program director to 1) ensure implementation of longitudinal curricula focused on clinical quality and safety and 2) oversee the planning and successful completion of Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements regarding system-based practices and safety/quality-related milestones required for resident graduation.
- Assist the Chair with appointment of core faculty to the residency program Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) and Program Evaluation Committee (PEC).
- Provide visibility for the Department as a distinct and accomplished quality and safety entity across B-UMCP and Banner Health through engagement with B-UMCP and Banner Health system quality and safety leaders. This may include, but is not limited to, providing mentorship for capstone projects and/or serving as faculty for the certificate program in Patient Safety and Quality. Serve as an active member of the B-UMCP Perioperative Workgroup.
- Assume an active role on hospital and school of medicine committees as required for effectively meeting goals and meeting duties/responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications |
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Hold an MD, DO or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
- Be board certified in Anesthesiology and be eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Arizona.
- Be eligible for medical staff membership at Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix.
- Be eligible for a University of Arizona academic appointment at the associate professor level or higher.
- Have experience and recognition in the development and successful implementation of new safety, quality and educational programs.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Have experience with hospital partnership and collaboration.
- Have experience serving on safety and quality committees.
- Exhibit skills in diplomacy, and the ability to influence decisions.
- Demonstrate expertise with information technology clinically as well as metrics/analytics.
- Have formal training in Lean Six Sigma (green belt or above).
- Hold certification as a Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) (or equivalent training [e.g. American Society for Health Care Risk Management, completion of American Society of Anesthesiologists Fundamentals of Patient Safety]).
- Demonstrate ability to obtain and apply knowledge to complex matters and exercise decision-making and problem-solving techniques.
- Demonstrate ability to partner to achieve outcomes and results, manage projects, develop programs and execute plans.
- Exhibit high level of proficiency in developing and maintaining productive interpersonal relationships among medical staff members, departmental leaders/directors/managers and employees, university, health system and hospital administrators.
- Show ability to effectively deal and interact with a diverse population and to effectively handle interpersonal conflict.
- Have a working knowledge of quality improvement processes.
- Demonstrate skills in principle-based negotiation, persuasion and organization.
