HDR is seeking a qualified individual to join a group of experts in the Maritime and Waterfront Infrastructure group as a Senior Project Engineer to lead design efforts related to heavy industrial seaport, riverport, and private cargo and passenger terminals and other waterfront infrastructure including, though not limited to, municipal, federal, state, and DOD seawalls, flood walls and gates, marinas, piers, and shipyards This position can be based out of Doral, Jacksonville, Tampa, or Mobile.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead and participate with teams to design small to large projects (construction values typically from $500K to $100M). Primary focus will be on geotechnical, structural, and general civil design elements of projects.
  • Develop design approaches and lead design and production of contract documents for projects ranging from limited complexity and scope to those including complex features. Efforts will be performed in collaboration with project management and senior market and operational leadership and be supported by junior to mid-level engineering staff under your direction.
  • Perform design tasks to clearly illustrate constructible/practical plans and develop construction details and technical specifications.
  • Production of documents (studies/reports, designs, details, sketches, technical specifications, construction contract documents, opinions of probable construction cost and schedule)
  • Assist Project Managers during project execution (internal delegation, accountability, and quality control).
  • Perform peer reviews of other design work and review project documents for conformity and quality assurance.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record on self-led or directed designs.
  • Develop best practices and improve design techniques and processes.
  • Assist upper-level management as a technical specialist and advisor.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate-level staff.

Other Responsibilities

  • Perform field observations to verify general conformance with contract documents.
  • Assist in developing technical approaches, proposals, and fee estimates.
  • Participate in strategic planning initiatives.
  • Support business development through participating in client engagement and pursuit interviews or presentations.
  • Active participation in technical organizations and/or publication of industry related technical articles.
  • Provide task and project management duties to include, but not limited to: development of fee proposals (scope, fee, schedule, assumptions); managing assigned resources, schedule, budget, and changes to these; participating in management project performance and financial reviews; serving as client's primary point of contact for the task or project; project closeout; developing task / project related marketing materials (project sheets, white papers, etc.)

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Civil/Structural Engineering
  • PE Licensed in one or more of FL, MS, AL and ability to gain additional state licensure as deemed beneficial to the program.
  • Familiarity with structural and marine design codes is desired, including but not limited to: AASHTO, ACI 318, AISC, ASCE 7, IBC, NDS for Wood Construction, API, OCIMF, MOTEMS, PIANC, UFC and USACE design manuals.
  • Active participation in a technical organization(s) relative to the industry and/or assistance (coauthoring) in publication of technical articles.
  • Minimum of 10 years of design experience with heavy industrial and ports and maritime related projects along with construction observation or administration experience and/or evidence of other mechanical aptitude.
  • Experience and strong aptitude in report writing, establishing design criteria, performing structural analysis (steel, concrete, timber), performing design calculations, production of construction drawings, modeling finite elements of staged construction and nonlinear foundations, soil mechanics, soil/structure interaction, and mooring/berthing analyses.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills to facilitate interaction with clients, peers, management and other design and production staff.
  • The ability to clearly demonstrate understanding of, or participation with, basic construction methods and logic of civil, industrial, coastal, and other types of related subject matter.
  • Current knowledge of linear, non-linear, large displacement, high end structural analysis and soil-structure interaction analysis and design software is mandatory. Examples include; SAP 2000 or RISA 3D, GROUP, LPILE, CWALSHT, PYWall, DeepEx
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • A minimum of 10 years structural engineering experience as it relates to building design
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar analytical software
  • Experience in design calculations and layouts
  • Ability to design and detail in steel, concrete, masonry and wood
  • Requires understanding of gravity analysis and lateral analysis
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
