Description

This position provides academic, career and personal counseling to current pharmacy students, develops and implements academic, career and student affairs opportunities, collaborates on outreach to internal and external constituencies including prospective and admitted students, alumni and community agencies on issues benefiting students in career counseling and academic and career goals.

Duties & Responsibilities

Counsel and advise students on academic, career and personal issues, and develop individual academic and career goals. Identify educational and career options appropriate for each student and assist students in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals.
Assist students with elective course selection, financial aid and scholarship choices as needed.
Refer students to counseling and services provided by other campus support units.
Assess students' interests, skills and goals related to prospective career development; provide specialized academic advising, resume review and personal counseling to students from diverse backgrounds and cultural differences to guide the student to graduation.
On behalf of students, communicate with faculty and departmental administrators on
student/instructor related issues; provide resource referrals for external issues that may affect matriculation. Collaborate with academic partners, faculty, alumni, and other constituents in developing activities that strengthen student educational experience.
Process, track, and report on student advising activities including advising notes, student petitions, grade audit, probation, dismissal, graduation clearance and monitor and report on success of assigned students.
Assist the Office of Student Affairs in the planning and implementation of new student orientation activities, white coat ceremony, student awards, commencement, career /job fairs and other special events as needed.
Support College of Pharmacy Student Organizations by encouraging student participation, foster involvement in organizations and attend events related to the academic, community, career and professional development of students.
As a member of the college admissions team, review and analyze incoming professional student files to determine any special needs or accommodations to best advise and counsel the student throughout the professional classroom and clinical rotation experience.
With the Office of Student Affairs (Chicago and Rockford), the College Recruiter, and college Office of Diversity and Inclusion, engage in outreach activities to both internal and external constituencies of alumni and community agencies, to promote recruitment and retention of targeted student populations. Develop relationships with feeder schools.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree required
  • A minimum of 1 to 2 years' experience required, preferably in higher education setting, advising, counseling or related experience
  • Strong knowledge of student development and academic programming required
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to work with diverse populations, with the ability to demonstrate an awareness and sensitivity to socio-ethnic and cultural communication styles required

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Health Professions, or closely related field preferred
  • Working knowledge of university / college academic and financial aid policies, academic admissions and records policies and procedures preferred
  • Demonstrable proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; Blackboard and Slate a plus
