Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Education is an academic unit in the School of Education and Business within the Division of Academic Affairs at Elizabeth City State University. The department offers students the Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in Elementary Education, Special Education and Birth to Kindergarten Education as well as the Master of Education in Elementary Education and the Master of School Administration.
Description of Work
The Preschool teacher is responsible for assisting with the care and education of young children, ages 3-5. The position is also responsible for assisting the lead teacher in creating a warm and nurturing relationship with each child, designing an environment that stimulates curiosity, and utilizing curriculum that is grounded in hands-on exploration and play. Using observation and assessment tools, the teacher assistant will assist the lead teacher with documenting each child's growth and learning in relation to his or her developmental level and the North Carolina Foundations for Early Learning and Development Standards.
Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
Communication: Ability to provide effective verbal feedback to parents regarding daily interactions. Ability to collect/record routine information effectively in written form regarding daily interactions, when necessary.

Child Care and Instruction: Ability to provide basic physical care of children under regular supervision.
Ability to report socialization and behavioral teaching needs to leadership.

Curriculum Implementation: Ability to assist in delivering established instructional plans.

Safety
: Ability to perform routine checks to ensure facilities are free of safety hazards. Ability to provide preventive care, first aid, and medication as directed.

Administration
: Ability to assist with maintaining inventory of supplies for the classroom., to log daily activities as needed and to participate in required ongoing professional development.
Minimum Training and Experience
Graduation from high school and one year of related childcare experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
