Rutgers School of Health Professions (
SHP) is seeking Medical Assistants to work in the Physician Assistant Studies Department.
Medical Assistants play a key role in the
HOPE Clinic, greeting patients, prepping them for exams, and verifying medical information. Responsibilities include preparing supplies and equipment for medical appointments, and assisting medical staff with lab specimen preparation, taking patient vitals, performing blood draws, conducting basic lab tests, and calling in prescriptions to pharmacies.
This role also includes maintaining patient records and managing the clinic's supply inventory, including ordering supplies and verifying deliveries. Under the direction of medical staff, Medical Assistants provide patient education and instructions, and answer patient questions.
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Welcomes patients by greeting them, in person or on the telephone; answering or referring inquiries.
- Prepares patients for the health care visit by directing and/or accompanying them to the examining room; providing examination gowns and drapes; helping them to position themselves for the examination and/or treatment; arranging examining room instruments, supplies, and equipment.
- Verifies patient information by interviewing patient; reviewing and/or recording medical history; taking vital signs; confirming purpose of visit or treatment.
- Supports patient care delivery by helping health care providers during examinations by performing tasks such as: preparing laboratory specimens; performing basic laboratory tests on the premises; disposing of contaminated supplies; telephoning prescriptions to pharmacies; drawing blood; taking electrocardiograms.
- Educates patients by providing medication and diet information and instructions; answering questions with clinician input.
- Completes records by recording patient examination, treatment, and test results.
- Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
- Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following, and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
- Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping patient care information confidential.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Completion of an accredited Certified Medical Assistant program required.
LPN or RN may also apply for this position.- One (1) year of clinical experience required.
CPR Certification required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
- Excellent verbal communication, organizational skills, professionalism, customer focus, familiarity with HIPAA compliance, excellent bedside manner, teamwork skills and the ability to create a safe, effective environment required.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Bilingual in English and Medical Spanish, Preferred.
- Experience with supply management, infection control, and scheduling preferred.
- Phlebotomy preferred.
