Job Summary

The Respiratory Therapist II is responsible for assessing and treating patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions to ensure safe, high-quality, and clinically appropriate care for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, and adult populations. This role serves as a clinical leader and resource to peers, providing expert respiratory care, patient and family education, and contributing to continuous improvement in respiratory care services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver professional respiratory care services as ordered by physicians, including:
    • Ventilator management and blood gas interpretation
    • Airway stabilization and clearance
    • Emergency and trauma response
    • Delivery of gases for cardiovascular support
    • Inhaled medication administration and evaluation
  • Follow established respiratory care procedures to ensure safe and effective care through prioritization, critical thinking, accurate documentation, and communication with the care team.
  • Function as a shift team leader, supporting peers and management in providing optimal respiratory care.
  • Serve as a preceptor for new employees and students as needed.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, educational programs, and ongoing professional development.

  • Adhere to all safety, infection control, privacy, and quality improvement policies and procedures.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Minimum one year of respiratory care experience.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within and across departments.
  • Knowledge and skills in:
    • Clinical respiratory assessment and therapy
    • Application of ventilator support
    • Patient and family education
    • Planning and conducting in-service education and training
  • Flexibility to work at all UCSF Medical Center locations as needed.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Additional certifications depending on assignment:
    • Pediatric Clinical Team Leaders - PALS
    • Neonatal Clinical Team Leaders - NRP
    • Adult Clinical Team Leaders - ACLS

License/Certification


  • Current and valid California Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) License
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board of Respiratory Therapy
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required
