What Your Job Will Be Like

The Advanced Metal Processing Department is seeking a hard-working R&D Laboratory Support Technologist to join our team.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Engaging with customers, fellow technologists, and staff to effectively support Sandia's diverse missions
  • Assisting in the procurement and safe operation of Metal Additive Printing systems to facilitate R&D prototyping efforts
  • Installing, upgrading, and maintaining these systems to ensure optimal performance
  • Collecting a broad spectrum of data during metal printing processes, including thermal, optical, and acoustic metrics.
  • Analyzing the collected data to inform and improve manufacturing processes.
  • Working with various additive manufacturing technologies, such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), Directed Energy Deposition (DED) (both powder and wire), Wire Arc Additive
  • Manufacturing (WAAM), and Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF).
  • Creating and maintaining Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) documentation, which includes developing operating procedures, pressure safety data packages, and safety protocols for laser and electrical systems.
  • Fostering a safe and collaborative work environment while adhering to security protocols.

Due to the nature of the work the selected applicant must be able to work onsite in Albuquerque, New Mexico Relocation will be provided for those that qualify.

Salary Range

$72,800 - $140,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • An associate's degree in Electromechanical Technology, Laser/Optical Technology, Additive Manufacturing, or a related engineering or technology field, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
  • Experience in metal additive manufacturing
  • Experience in CAD and/or CAM software applications
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance
Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience in operating, troubleshooting, maintaining, and/or repairing Laser and Wire Arc-based Metal Additive Manufacturing printers
  • Familiarity with conventional or subtractive manufacturing processes
  • Knowledge of lasers and optics
  • Understanding of electronics and electrical characterization
  • Experience with pressure systems and electro-mechanical systems
  • Background in CNC machining
  • Ability to operate or program robotics or motion systems
  • An active DOE or DoD security clearance
About Our Team

The Advanced Metal Processing Department and Rapid Development Machine Shop 1812 provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of advanced manufacturing, metal additive manufacturing and laser machining/surface modification. Advanced manufacturing includes the design and fabrication of components by conventional subtractive machining, additive manufacturing, electrical discharge machining (EDM), laser machining, laser etching/annealing, vacuum induction melting, and optical probe measurements. Metal additive manufacturing expertise includes alloy development, qualification/acceptance, and design. Current technologies utilized include laser powder bed, metal fused deposition (FDM), and powder and wire directed energy deposition (DED). Our staff supports a variety of programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions. The analytic capabilities available: High Speed Microscopy, High Speed Thermal Imaging, Thermal Desorption, Thermal Diffusivity, Particle Size Analysis, Avalanche Angle Measurement, Thermal Imaging, plus others.
