Job Summary
     
     
 Under supervision, responsible for receiving/processing/routing clinical specimens, providing telephone/ results reporting coverage in the Receiving Section. Assist with animal care, handling and animal care facility maintenance. Responsible/assist in making/shipping biological media/reagents, washing glassware and managing biohazardous waste. These responsibilities are performed on a rotational basis.          No minimum education required.Experience working in an environment with frequently changing priorities and work interruptions, and skills to effectively shift priorities and prioritize a heavy workload to meet required deadlines, while providing attention to detail with a high level of accuracy.Interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills (in person, in writing and by telephone) to interact effectively and professionally with a wide variety of individuals including CAHFS faculty and staff, clients, individuals from other university units, and government/outside agencies.Working knowledge of diagnostic procedures and tests used in a diagnostic laboratory, as well as veterinary and medical terminology.Skills to learn appropriate sample types and sampling techniques for a variety of microbiologic, immunologic, histologic and clinical chemistry tests and how adverse sample conditions may affect testing.Skills to use analytical balances, volumetric glassware, PH meters, centrifuges, automated dispensing equipment, sterilizing ovens, glass washers and dryers, and autoclaves.Skills to work with blood, dead animals, tissues, and to handle potentially infectious material.Computer skills to quickly/accurately perform data entry into computer.          40% - Specimen and Data Management35% - Glass Washing/Media Preparation and Shipping Areas20% - Telephone Coverage and Results Reporting5% - Other Duties Department Overview The purpose of Laboratory Support Services is to aid the various laboratory sections by coordinating, managing and executing the reception of samples/clients, aid the various laboratory sections by providing glass washing and sterilization services, shipping and biohazardous waste management. In addition, the section provides biological media and reagents for the five laboratories in the system. CAHFS provides California's livestock and poultry industries, and veterinary practitioners who serve them, with a full range of diagnostic laboratory services for disease control, enhancement of health management, and protection from diseases common to animal and humans. In meeting this need, the CAHFS also serves as the backbone of California's disease warning system through its animal disease surveillance program. The system consists of four laboratories currently located in Davis, Turlock, Tulare and San Bernardino. Funding for this program is provided through a contract with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and through revenue generated from user fees. An additional program, the Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, is funded through a contract with the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) and horse wagering monies and provides full-service drug testing and a pharmacology research and development program. This is not a research position. The position is located in a diagnostic laboratory where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential.
