Position Summary:
The Robert W. Van Houten Library at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is seeking a dependable and customer-focused Part-Time Library Assistant I to support evening and closing operations. Reporting to the Director of Library Operations, the Library Assistant provides front-line customer service, performs circulation and basic library support duties, and helps maintain a safe and welcoming environment for students, faculty, and visitors.
This position may work up to 28 hours per week during the academic year (September-May). The typical schedule includes 10:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 6:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday.
Essential Functions:
-Works a closing schedule, ensuring the library is properly closed and secured at the end of the day.
-Performs routine circulation tasks, including check-ins, checkouts, renewals, shelving, and shelf reading to maintain collection order.
-Answers phones, processes group study room bookings, and assists with the pickup and arrangement of library furniture.
-Provides friendly, courteous, and professional assistance to patrons in person, by phone, and by email
-Assists patrons with basic directional and ready-reference questions and helps locate library materials and resources as needed.
-Collaborates effectively with other library staff to ensure smooth daily operations.
-Provides guidance and work direction to student assistants during assigned shifts.
-Performs other related duties as assigned.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
-High school diploma or GED required.
-Strong commitment to providing excellent customer service.
-Punctual, reliable, and maintains excellent attendance.
-Ability to work a flexible schedule, including late evenings and weekends.
-Effective oral and written communication skills.
-Proficient in clerical and computer skills.
-Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, bend, and move materials as needed.
-Demonstrated ability to make sound judgments, take initiative, and pay close attention to detail.
-Capable of working independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
-At the university's discretion, education and experience requirements may be waived for candidates who can demonstrate an equivalent combination of training and experience that prepares them for success in this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
-Associate degree.
-Minimum of one (1) year of experience working in an academic, public, or research library setting.
Salary Information:
In compliance with the NJ Pay Transparency Law, the hourly rate/range for this position is $20.00-$25.00 (USD). NJIT considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses or other items.
