Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Founded in 1921, the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering is a foundational unit in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. The mission of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering is to 'Harness environmental solutions to enhance public health, well-being, and foster resilience in the face of climate and environmental change.' We are committed to: (1) CHARACTERIZING ENVIRONMENTS. We characterize chemical contaminants and infectious agents, their transport and transformation in air, water, wastewater, soil, in humans and the built environment; (2) ELUCIDATING MECHANISMS: We use molecular and data science approaches to understand mechanisms of chemical transformation and/or disease causation; (3) ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS: We develop engineering solutions to control environmental contamination and improve the health and well-being of communities, and to mitigate the impacts of climate change on air, water, and health; and (4) TRANSLATING RESEARCH: We protect vulnerable populations and translate research to our partners and with impact on policies, practice, and health. The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering comprises 33 faculty and ~200 students including ~70 undergraduate majors enrolled. Last fiscal year the Department oversaw $10M in research expenditures, including in areas such as atmospheric and air pollution chemistry, climate change, emerging contaminants (e.g., per and polyfluoroalkyl substances ( PFAS)), environmental health, infectious disease transmission, and water/sanitation and hygiene. The Department also focuses on preventing harmful impacts of various environmental hazards on communities.
