Accounting Intern - Waste Connections

Department: Finance & Accounting
Reports To: District Controller
Internship Type: Paid ($20/hour) | Part-Time (~30 hours a week) | 12-week Summer Internship

Location: Placerville, CA

Overview:
Waste Connections is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Accounting Intern to join our dynamic team. This internship offers hands-on experience in a fast-paced, essential industry, providing exposure to both corporate and field operations. You'll work closely with our Controllers and finance team while gaining insight into the operational side of our business-including ride-alongs with our garbage truck drivers to understand how accounting supports frontline operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accounts Payable: Assist with invoice processing, vendor reconciliations, and payment tracking.
  • Capital Requests: Support the review and documentation of capital expenditure proposals.
  • Variance Analysis: Help analyze budget vs. actual performance and prepare summary reports.
  • Contract Reviews: Participate in reviewing vendor and customer contracts for financial accuracy and compliance.
  • Journal Entries: Prepare and post journal entries under supervision, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Shadow Controllers: Learn directly from site Controllers about financial reporting, forecasting, and compliance.
  • Ride-Alongs: Join drivers on garbage truck routes to gain firsthand understanding of operational workflows and cost drivers.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field as a Junior or Senior.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; familiarity with accounting software is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
