Position Summary

The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track faculty position in Studio Art/Art History at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Full-time faculty at UNM-LA are required to teach, engage in service, and engage in professional development activities in accordance with the established workload policies. The teaching load will regularly be comprised of introductory and intermediate level courses in Studio Art and Art History. To meet the unique needs of our branch campus, a portion of the teaching load can be reallocated to Service or Professional development/Activities/Scholarship or administrative duties, in consultation with the Dean and Program Coordinator. This position is responsible for curating gallery space on campus, developing campus art shows and events, and integrating UNM-LA art with the surrounding art community. Faculty may have the opportunity to develop courses in the faculty member's specific areas of expertise and interest. Full-time faculty members teach assigned day, evening, and weekend classes, in various modalities, in accordance with established guidelines and policies, as well as participate in student advising, faculty governance committees, other academic and institutional support activities, and supervisory responsibilities as assigned.

All faculty members are expected to remain current in teaching best practices and transformational pedagogy, and to adhere to accepted standards for professionals in education. Additional responsibilities may include possible supervision of internships, participating in curriculum development, training and mentoring adjunct faculty, attending forums and meetings, and serving on additional department and college committees and boards as requested. Final offer is contingent upon the applicant having the ability to be on campus in Los Alamos at least three days per week. Appointment begins August 10, 2026.

SALARY:

Starting salary is commensurate with degrees and experience. Base salary for 1.0 FTE is $65,000 for a 9-month faculty position, depending on qualifications. Summer teaching may be possible and optional with additional compensation. An excellent package of benefits is provided (see: https://hr.unm.edu/benefits).


Qualifications

Minimum requirements:

(1) Master's degree in Studio Art with at least 15 graduate hours in Art History by application date

OR

Master's degree in Art History with at least 15 graduate hours in Studio Art by application date

(2) College teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications:

(1) MFA in Studio Art or Ph.D. in Art History by application date

(2) Experience teaching varied types of studio arts at a post-secondary institution

(3) Demonstrated evidence of community and/or campus-wide involvement in the arts

(4) Evidence of progress/learning in Art History or Studio Art

(5) A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities
