The Clinical Educator, Athletic Training demonstrates a high level of expertise in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the complex patients and their responses to actual or potential health problems. This role assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. Influences professional role competence. Provides direction, education, leadership and accountability for program development, implementation and evaluation in area of responsibility. This role includes professional development and empowerment of staff as well as management of resources to promote desired outcomes with attention to quality, efficiency and cost.

Essential Functions

Acts as a leader for practice transitions, transfer of knowledge, skills and attitudes and as a change agent to promote organizational and practice excellence by: functioning as partner, consultant and collaborator for interprofessional colleagues in the development and dissemination of education on clinical practice changes, regulatory requirements, organizational priorities, safety events, policy and procedure.

Supports education and implementation of organizational priorities through educational programming for new and changing clinical practice and organizational processes (e.g. Athletic Training Clinical Ladder). Participates in departmental and organizational strategic planning, ad hoc projects and educational programs as requested by interprofessional colleagues to advance VCUHS goal achievement.

Promotes the ongoing professional development of athletic training and interprofessional team members. Uses the educational design process to bridge the knowledge, skills, and/or practice gaps identified through a needs assessment. Advances the profession and the specialty through mentoring, consultation, and contributing to the professional development of colleagues, athletic trainers, students, and others.

Supports the transition of athletic trainers and other healthcare team members across learning and practice environments, roles, and professional stages. Protects the autonomy, dignity, confidentiality, and rights of all individuals involved in the learning process. Performs role in a nonjudgmental, nondiscriminatory, and ethical manner that is sensitive to learner diversity. Analyzes cost and anticipated return on investment for leaning activities, programs and projects.

Evaluates personal practice in relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, relevant statutes, rules and regulations. Collaborates with inter-professional teams, leaders, stakeholders and others to facilitate professional practice and positive patient care outcomes.

Specialist acts as a champion of scientific inquiry, generating new knowledge, and integrating best available evidence into practice as follows: promotes the generation and dissemination of new knowledge. Uses evidence to advance athletic training practice, guide clinical practice, and improve patient care. Participates in research, evidence-based practice (EBP), and quality improvement (QI) activities congruent with the organization's practice environment, and the individual's role preparation as a practitioner.

Has full authority and accountability for direction and leadership of program planning, guideline development, setting of practice standards within the confines of organizations/divisions/unit's mission, goals and objectives.

Manages human, fiscal and other resources to ensure quality programs/processes/services with measurable positive outcomes.

Athletic Training Grand Rounds Committee Member

Required Education

Master's Degree in a specialized curriculum accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, Healthcare or other related field

Preferred Education

Doctorate in Athletic Training Education, Healthcare or other related field

Licensure/Certification Required

Licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia as an Athletic Trainer.

National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Board of Certification (BOC)

Current ECC certification.

Licensure/Certification Preferred

Orthopaedic Technologist Certification

Years and Type of Required Experience

Five (5) years previous athletic training experience.

Three (3) years in Academia/ Athletic Training Clinical Education/Preceptorship

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

Education program supervision, design, implementation

Strategic planning, policies and procedures, education

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

Experience in staff education and professional development (orientation, preceptorship, in-services, education, etc.)

Completion of Athletic Training Residency Program accredited by the Commission on Accreditations of Athletic Training Education
