The Role and Team

The Medallia Architecture team is seeking a Senior Staff AI Engineer to drive the company's strategy and adoption of Artificial Intelligence across Medallia's product and platform ecosystem. This role sits at the core of our platform modernization and scalability initiatives, helping R&D teams harness AI to accelerate engineering efficiency, enhance product capabilities, and enable intelligent, data-driven experiences for our customers.

You will play a key role in evaluating emerging AI technologies, rapidly prototyping new solutions, and establishing architectural patterns that integrate AI safely and effectively into Medallia's global-scale SaaS platform. You'll also lead enablement programs across R&D to ensure teams are empowered to adopt AI tools responsibly and productively.

The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in AI and modern cloud architectures with a passion for innovation, mentorship, and practical impact at enterprise scale.

Responsibilities

  • Technology Evaluation & Strategy: Continuously research, evaluate, and prototype emerging AI and ML technologies (e.g., LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation, multimodal models, vector databases, and AI agents) to identify opportunities that improve product scalability, developer velocity, and platform efficiency.
  • Applied Innovation: Lead rapid proof-of-concepts that demonstrate how AI can optimize workflows, enhance system capabilities, or increase unit and data processing efficiency across Medallia's global infrastructure.
  • Architecture & Standards: Define and guide AI architecture and integration patterns that align with Medallia's long-term technical vision - ensuring scalable, secure, and compliant use of AI across our platform and engineering systems.
  • Enablement & Advocacy: Partner with engineering and product leaders to create internal training programs, documentation, and best practices that increase AI literacy and enable safe, effective AI adoption across R&D.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with Product, Data Science, and Platform Engineering teams to identify high-value AI applications, evaluate build-vs-buy options, and align efforts with enterprise architecture standards
  • Thought Leadership & Mentorship: Serve as an AI technology evangelist within Medallia, authoring internal white papers and sharing knowledge through presentations and workshops. Mentor engineers and technical leads to grow organizational AI capability and architectural depth.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering, including 5+ years applying AI/ML technologies in production or platform contexts.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing AI-driven systems or integrating LLM-based capabilities into enterprise-scale products.
  • Demonstrated understanding of distributed systems, cloud architecture (AWS or equivalent), and data-intensive platform design.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep hands-on experience with AI/ML frameworks and tools (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, LangChain, vector databases, or embedding pipelines).
  • Experience developing or evaluating generative AI systems (LLMs, RAG pipelines, fine-tuning, or prompt engineering).
  • Proven ability to translate business and architectural goals into scalable AI strategies and implementation roadmaps.
  • Experience using AI tools to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of enterprise SaaS development, including AI-assisted coding, testing, documentation, and operational analytics.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills - able to influence at multiple levels, drive consensus, and advocate for responsible AI use.
  • Experience designing and delivering technical training, workshops, or enablement programs across distributed engineering teams.
  • Passion for applied innovation and measurable impact - especially in improving scalability, developer efficiency, and platform intelligence.
