The Test Systems & Mechanical Engineer I is an entry-level sustaining engineering role supporting the ongoing lifecycle of both test systems and mechanical components used in electro-mechanical, software-controlled medical devices. Reporting into the Sustaining Engineering group, this position focuses on maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving test systems and products that are commercially released.
The engineer will work with cross-functional teams to ensure existing devices, fixtures, and test equipment remain reliable, compliant, and manufacturable throughout their lifecycle. Responsibilities include updating test methods, resolving mechanical issues, supporting production and field troubleshooting, and driving incremental improvements for quality, serviceability, and cost optimization. This role offers broad exposure to sustaining activities across both test systems and mechanical engineering, providing a strong foundation for growth in a regulated medical device environment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Test Systems (~50%)

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and improve existing test systems, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Perform updates to test hardware, software, and documentation to ensure ongoing reliability, compliance, and usability.
  • Support verification and validation (V&V) activities by executing and updating test protocols and reports for sustaining projects in compliance with company procedures.
  • Provide technical support for calibration, preventive maintenance, and transfer of updated test systems to operations.
  • Partner with the product development team when new test systems are handed off, ensuring smooth transition and long-term support.

Mechanical Engineering (~50%)

  • Support sustaining engineering activities for existing medical devices, components, and fixtures.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical system issues, proposing and implementing design modifications as needed.
  • Update and maintain CAD models, drawings, and engineering documentation to reflect design changes.
  • Conduct lab testing, inspections, and troubleshooting of existing assemblies, fixtures, and prototypes.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and suppliers to address product issues, improve manufacturability, and ensure continued compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Drive incremental improvements for cost reduction, reliability, serviceability, and quality of current products.

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):

Minimum

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 0-2 years of engineering experience (internship or co-op experience acceptable).
  • Familiarity with automated test systems, sensors, or data acquisition.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Programming experience (such as Python, C++, etc.)
  • Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, or equivalent).
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Effective communicator, both oral and written, with strong organizational and project management skills; with high attention to detail.
  • Self-starter with strong initiative and personal accountability.

Preferred:

  • Experience with LabVIEW, MATLAB or other test automation tools.
  • Basic electrical lab equipment working knowledge such as DMM and oscilloscope
  • Prior experience in a regulated industry (medical device, aerospace, automotive, etc.).
  • Knowledge of FDA QSR, ISO 13485, or other relevant quality standards.
  • Understanding of design-for-manufacturing and tolerance analysis methods.

Compensation & Total Rewards:

Estimated Starting Salary Range: $95,000 - $105,000

*Estimated Starting Salary Range is reflective of the range Bracco Medical Technologies reasonably expects to pay for the position. The range provided is based on salary and market data specific to the position.
