| Organizational Unit Overview |
East Carolina University, a newly designated R1 research institution, exemplifies how higher education drives public impact through the generation and application of knowledge. Faculty and students collaborate across disciplines and with community, industry, and government partners to conduct research, scholarship, and creative work that leads to new technologies, advancements in healthcare and education, and innovative solutions to vexing challenges. These efforts are deeply rooted in the needs of rural and coastal North Carolina, ensuring that discoveries are both academically significant and practically relevant. By bringing translational research into classrooms, industry, and communities,
ECU fosters a culture where knowledge is co-created and applied.
The
Office of Research, Economic Development and Engagement (
REDE), led jointly by the Chief Research Officer and Chief Innovation and Engagement Officer, supports this mission through units focused on research administration, compliance, development, and innovation.
REDE oversees research compliance and strategy, develops institutional research policy, and sponsored project management, while also creating and leading partnerships that promote economic growth and community engagement. The office advances innovation including technology transfer and commercialization through the Office of Licensing and Commercialization and on the University's research and innovation campuses.
ECU is currently home to nine
UNC System-recognized centers and institutes that transcend traditional academic boundaries to address complex regional and global issues. These centers-such as the Coastal Studies Institute and the East Carolina Diabetes and Obesity Institute-bring together interdisciplinary teams and partner with government, industry, and community leaders. Additional college-based centers, research service units, and field sites extend ECU's reach across the state, supporting both academic and community-based research.
REDE serves as ECU's gateway for connecting industry and community partners with faculty, students, and researchers. This includes:
- Facilitating mutually beneficial partnerships with businesses, nonprofits, and public agencies.
- Supporting licensing and commercialization of university innovations.
- Advancing national security and industry initiatives through applied research.
