Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Director of Commuter Student Life for Student Affairs - Dean of Students. This position reports to the Associate Dean of Students and is responsible for supporting the quality of life for the commuter student experience, advocating for commuter students, and connecting commuter students to each other and to university resources.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Coordinates and advocates for institutional resources for commuter students while mitigating challenges that might distract students from their academic and personal goals.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates programs, practices, and services that address the needs of a diverse commuter student population, including academic, student life, and special-population concerns.
  • Works closely with academic schools to ensure students have access to university resources as they navigate their journey.
  • Advises the Commuter Student Association, meeting regularly with the executive board, to stay abreast of issues and concerns related to commuter students and coordinating programming opportunities for commuter students.
  • Handles budget management, policy development, marketing and outreach, and event planning.
  • Represents the university at campus functions, regional meetings, and national conferences.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in Higher Education/Student Affairs or related field.
  • At least five (5) years of experience.

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Comparable educational background and experience is expected in student development theories and practices to understand the terms, sensitives, and complexities of a student-centered very large institution.
  • Experience in a department within a Student Affairs organization (e.g. Residence Life, Student Activities, Student Development).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working with or advising commuter students.
  • Seven to ten years working with the college population.
