Full Time 40 weekly hours, day shift

The Oncology Financial Navigator serves as a patient advocate, liaison, and educator to assist cancer patients with understanding and navigating the cost of their care and healthcare coverage. Some patients may experience financial vulnerability during their treatment. Baptist Health Louisville financial navigators evaluate their level of exposure to the possibility of financial toxicity which can hinder patient's treatment. This personalized approach to providing patients with knowledge and hopefully financial savings will add a level of comfort and improved health outcomes to an otherwise challenging moment.

Job Duties

  • Meets with the patient during interdisciplinary introduction meetings to review patient's insurance(s), coverage, and potential out of pocket expenses. Assessment of patient's financial, healthcare, and household needs. Identify financial barriers to access treatment.

  • Serves as a liaison for financial matters throughout treatment, including follow up on insurance and financial risk assessment.

  • With a high level of initiative, assesses the financial needs of patients, establishes a positive supportive relationship, assists in developing a plan of care and thoroughly documents the findings, recommendations and interventions made.

  • Participates in performance improvement activities and assists in interpretation of performance improvement data.

  • Participates in consultation, sets professional boundaries, maintains confidentiality, and adheres to ethical conduct.

  • Adheres to safety responsibilities and initiatives.

  • Able to perform these services throughout the continuum of care (outpatient, inpatient and other various departments)

  • Participates in data collection for quality and research purposes.

  • Preferred: In addition to the above skills, have a thorough knowledge of Health insurance guidelines, programs and plans; patient assistance programs, co-pay assistance programs, Medicaid, Medicare health plans, COBRA guidelines and Health Care Reform. Furthermore, to have the ability to find new programs that could assist patients with their financial needs.

  • Works with the oncology service line team in developing innovative strategies to serve the educational and support needs of oncology professional staff, patients, and families.

Minimum Education, Training, and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree nursing, psychology, social work, finance, or other healthcare related field (preferred)

  • Minimum two (2) years in oncology or other applicable healthcare setting

  • Experience with Medicare health plans, COBRA regulations, Medicaid guidelines, PAP and co-pay assistance programs (preferred).

  • Knowledge of CPT, HCPCS and ICD codes.
