Job Summary


The Lead Public Safety Dispatcher is responsible for dispatching police personnel in response to calls for service, assists the Technical Services Director, and maximizes continuity within the Dispatch Unit. This position provides lead direction of the operations of the Dispatch center as well as performs the job duties assigned while on-duty in the 9-1-1 center. Positions in this class serve as shift leads and have full lead responsibility over assigned personnel in addition to performing the job duties of a Public Safety Dispatcher. Direction is provided by the Technical Services Director and the Communications Operations Manager. Responsibilities include direction over subordinate Public Safety Dispatchers. Incumbents may serve as training coordinators for formal training and performance programs. The lead Public Safety Dispatchers, at the direction of the Technical Services Director, will supply input for employee evaluations.

The Lead Public safety Dispatcher is responsible for the general operation of the UCSF Communication Center, which consists of the following: process telephone calls for 911 police, fire medical and non-emergency services; input information into a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System; input data into the various Law Enforcement Telecommunications Systems and interpret the printout information once it is obtained; operate a multi-channel radio system under emergency as well as non- emergency circumstances, adhering to FCC rules and regulations in the course of its operation and ability to audibly monitor radio traffic; operate a hand-held two-way radio for communications; maintain various logs; process various alarms; and perform other duties as assigned.

Department Description

The UCSF Police Department provides contemporary police services, including criminal investigation, community policing, crime prevention and suppression, emergency management, and site security services to a daily population of over 60,000 people at our University and contract locations. Founded in 1864, UCSF includes the 107-acre Parnassus campus that is home to graduate professionals in dentistry, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy; a graduate division for pre- and postdoctoral scientists; UCSF Medical Center; UCSF Children's Hospitals; and Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute (LPPI). UCSF is considered one of the nation's premier health sciences teaching, training, and research centers. UCSF is the only UC campus dedicated exclusively to the health sciences.

The UCSF Police Department is known for its community service orientation, effectiveness at preventing crime through campus community involvement, and for providing a safe living and working environment for the promotion of education, research, and public service. The Professional Standards Division is responsible for providing administrative, financial, and personnel services for the department.

Required Qualifications


  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum qualifications for Public Safety Dispatcher include satisfactory completion of a POST-certified, 80-hour Basic Complaint/Dispatcher course within 12 months of the date of hire; undergo a thorough background investigation; an evaluation of oral communication skills; the completion of 12 months' probation; and the completion of a medical examination.
  • Passing Score on POST Entry-level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery, before academy.
  • Effective written and verbal communications
  • Must be able to work shifts on a rotational basis (days, swings, and midnights); must be able to work on-call assignments and/or overtime as required.
  • Ability to pass medical and psychological examinations and an extensive background investigation in compliance with California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) standards.
  • Knowledge of Police Dispatching Procedures, including the operation of state-of-the-art Telephone and Radio Systems, within one year of appointment
  • Knowledge of Information Technology, Personal Computers, and related Software Applications. Knowledge of Police Dispatching Procedures, including the operation of state-of-the-art Telephone and Radio Systems
  • Knowledge of Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Records Systems, Knowledge of Information Technology, Personal Computers, and related Software Applications.
