Job Summary

Works on research data reporting assignments that are of moderate diversity in scope. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

The Bioinformatician will be responsible for analyzing, and interpreting large-scale, high-dimensional datasets, encompassing multi-omics data and clinical data (e.g., cognitive testing, questionnaires, neuroimaging). The scope of this role includes:

  • Multi-Omics Data Analysis:
    • Integrate and analyze datasets from various omics platforms, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics.
    • Develop and apply advanced bioinformatics pipelines and tools for multi-omics data integration and analysis.
    • Identify biomarkers and molecular signatures associated with neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Expertise in Large-Scale Datasets:
    • Utilize statistical and computational methods to query, clean, analyze, and visualize large-scale datasets.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to leverage large-scale data for research and clinical applications.
    • Stay updated with the latest advancements in data science and bioinformatics to continuously improve analytical capabilities.
By integrating and analyzing diverse datasets, the Bioinformatician will contribute to advancing our understanding of neurodegenerative diseases and support the development of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $69,000 - $100,200 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Edward and Pearl Fein Memory and Aging Center (MAC) is an internationally renowned clinical research center with over 200 full time employees with offices and clinical research space located in the Sandler Neurosciences Building and other buildings on the UCSF Mission Bay Campus. The MAC provides clinical care for patients suffering from neurodegenerative disease processes; from this clinical population, external referrals, and direct recruitment efforts we enroll patients into more than 50 structured research protocols and/or treatment trials. We are a California Alzheimer's Research Center and a federal Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and one year of experience or equivalent experience / training.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in statistical analysis, data transformation and linking, data systems programming, and/or data schema design and documentation
  • Strong programming skills in R, Python, or similar languages.
  • Ability to multitask and be organized in a dynamic environment with competing priorities
  • Thorough skills associated with statistical analysis and systems programming.
  • Thorough skills in analysis and consultation.
  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations.
  • Proven track record of success managing and maintaining accurate data in a complex data environment
  • Minimum of 2 years of research or clinical data management experience (can be obtained through education)
  • Working knowledge of research function.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced degree (MS, PhD) in related area (ex. Neuroscience, Bioinformatics, Data Science, Computational Biology, Psychology, Statistics) and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Experience in data consultation in a cross-functional environment,
  • Working knowledge of research function
