The Sweetpotato and Potato Breeding and Genetics Program at
NCSU is hiring research technicians! Opportunities for full-time work are available depending on interest and experience. Our lab is a leading force in breeding new sweetpotato and potato varieties for growers in North Carolina and globally. Duties will include assisting research staff, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars in all aspects of our table-stock, processing, and ornamental breeding programs. You will be exposed to a dynamic plant breeding program with active research in the laboratory, greenhouse, and field. An interest in plant production and a high level of accuracy, attention to detail and passion to learn more about plants and agricultural research are needed. Experience in horticulture and/or a related major is preferred, but not required. If you are interested in learning about the art and science of plant breeding in NC's most important vegetable crops, this is the perfect job for you! We apply both traditional and molecular breeding techniques to solve emerging problems in the field, from resistance to diseases, drought, and heat tolerance, to culinary evaluations relevant to ever-changing consumer preferences.
The specific duties for these positions will include assisting with greenhouse activities such as pollinating, trimming, trellising, watering, and general plant maintenance. During the field season (April-November), work will include planting, managing, and harvesting research trials on our research station and on-farm trials. Our research program is based in Raleigh, but these positions will include substantial travel opportunities to field sites around eastern NC during the field season and in our laboratories on campus.
We are looking for applicants to commit to a full 11-month period, however, additional availability past that window is desirable for candidates. The state of North Carolina stipulates a maximum 11 month employment period followed by a 1 month leave of absence for any employees in this position. Benefits are not included in this position.
