Essential Job Duties
This position plays a key role in the Diagnostic Imaging Department by supporting advanced imaging services for small, large, and exotic patients across the hospital. The role provides hands-on veterinary care, technical expertise, and coordination for patients requiring specialized diagnostic procedures while contributing to a dynamic teaching environment. Team members in this role thrive in a fast-paced setting, demonstrate strong communication and time-management skills, and collaborate effectively with clinicians, students, and specialty services to ensure exceptional patient care.
Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Assess patients through record review and communication with referring services to support diagnostic and treatment planning.
  • Provide direct patient care, including venipuncture, SQ/IM/IV injections, medication administration, restraint, and positioning for imaging procedures.
  • Operate specialized imaging and monitoring equipment such as digital radiography, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, pulse oximetry, and IV pumps.
  • Perform drug calculations, monitor patients during imaging procedures, and follow strict protocols for managing infectious or antibiotic-resistant cases.
  • Support multiple specialty areas across the hospital, ensuring smooth coordination and timely patient flow.


Departmental Coordination & Teaching Support:

  • Manage daily imaging schedules, prioritizing critical cases and maintaining clear communication across services.
  • Accurately document patient care and diagnostic information in hospital systems, including using and reviewing radiology-specific platforms.
  • Assist with billing related to imaging procedures and maintain supplies and equipment for departmental operations.
  • Help orient, teach, and coach new staff, students, interns, and residents in procedures, policies, and best practices.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work environment in alignment with hospital, OSHA, EHS, and radiation safety standards.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.

Qualifications




Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in medical diagnostics; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licenses.
Preferred Qualifications


  • Veterinary Experience & Technical Skills:

    • Previous experience in canine/feline veterinary settings, with proficiency in handling sick animals, hazardous materials, anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and maintaining safety standards.




  • Professional Communication & Customer Service:
    • Strong ability to communicate effectively, maintain professionalism in emotionally charged situations, and deliver high-quality customer service.


  • Physical & Scheduling Flexibility:
    • Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds and willing to work beyond scheduled hours when needed.


  • Teamwork & Independent Judgment:
    • Effective team player who contributes to problem-solving and advancement, while also able to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and seek assistance when appropriate.


  • Teaching & Technical Proficiency:
    • Skilled in working with computers/electronics and motivated to teach and mentor 4th-year veterinary students.


Required License or Certification

  • Licensed/Registered/Certified by any state
  • Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program
