Overview

Paramedic Air and Ground Crew

  • Janesville, Wisconsin and Rockford, Illinois
  • Full-time, 12 hour shift schedule - including night shift rotation

The transport paramedic is responsible for providing high quality critical care and transportation of critically ill or injured patients to the appropriate medical facilities utilizing standards and guidelines established by Mercyhealth Medical Director(s). The transport paramedic is a key member of the critical and emergency medical care team and demonstrates the highest quality of emergency/critical care standards of practice and commitment to safety. May include variable shifts, weekends, holiday and/or on-call hours. Performs other duties as assigned including floating to various units based on identified needs and clinical competency


Responsibilities

Job Duties:

  • Provides pre-hospital advanced life support care from the initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility; maintains thorough patient care documentation in a timely manner.
  • Practices within his/her scope of practice as defined by the State of Illinois/Wisconsin and Mercyhealth. Maintains competency in knowledge and psychomotor skills by participating in ongoing laboratory and clinical experiences. Communicates educational needs to the program leadership.
  • Provides patient care as assigned and per routine, according to standards of care, shift routines, and policies and procedures.
  • Performs advanced skills and procedures as approved by Mercyhealth.
  • Maintains documentation of required licensure, certifications, continuing education, and safety training, OSHA and HIPAA training, clinical rotations, and advanced procedures. Attends educational programs as required by the medical director.
  • Serves as a role model, educator and clinical resource. Participates regularly in departmental activities, simulation, projects and committees (to include research and publishing opportunities). Maintains awareness of current issues related to pre-hospital care through participation in professional activities, i.e., national, state legislative--elected or appointed.
  • Acts as a preceptor and/or participates in on-boarding/orientation of new partners and students. Clearly communicates program goals and objectives.
  • Knowledgeable in use and routine maintenance of all equipment and supplies used by Mercyhealth. Responsible for reporting medical equipment failures and taking initial steps to ensure repair of equipment as directed. Maintains adequate supplies within program transport vehicles to deliver patient care. Assist with the routine maintenance of the ambulance, equipment and facilities to ensure a clean, orderly, and professional appearance to insure rapid response to all transport requests.
  • Functions as a medical flight member by attending pre-mission briefings, mission debriefings and completes necessary documentation. Assists in pre-mission liftoff checklist and assists pilot as requested, i.e., radio, navigational, and visual observation activities. Complies with safety standards to assure safety of self, medical personnel, patient, and equipment. Conducts aircraft safety briefings as needed.
  • Functions as a CCTT ground team member by attending pre-call briefings and post-call debriefings. Assists in pre-call, i.e., radio, navigational, and weather observation activities. Complies with safety standards to assure safety of self, medical personnel, patient, and equipment. Conducts safety briefings as needed.
  • Participates regularly in Mercyhealth meetings, activities, projects and committees (to include research and publishing opportunities).
  • Participates in patient and referring institution follow-up and planned outreach marketing and education activities.
  • Maintains a clean work and patient environment.
  • Processes orders in an accurate and timely manner. Answers the telephone and call lights appropriately provides information or relays messages to patients and staff.
  • Maintains and orders supplies- Including scanning, stocking and ordering new supplies and disposing of expired or damaged supplies within departments/ambulances.
  • Performs venipuncture, IV access, 12-lead acquisition, blood glucose analysis, and CPR as ordered/directed.
  • Serves as a resource to neonatal/pediatric partners.
  • Performs advanced skills and procedures as approved by Mercyhealth.
  • Floats to outlying Mercyhealth facilities (Janesville, Rockford, Walworth, Harvard) based on identified needs/staffing models.
  • Directs visitors to patients' rooms. Maintains medical records of current patients. Processes patient charges and orders supplies as needed.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Excellent communication skills and customer service skills.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and at least three years' related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum three (3) years' (minimum of 4000 hours) recent experience in a busy 911 system an ALS experience. Preferred: five (5) years' Additional years of experience.
  • Previous critical care transport and flight experience preferred

CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

  • National Registry Certificate required
  • Paramedic license in the State of practice is required.
  • Dual State of Illinois and Wisconsin licensure required within 90 days.
  • Current AHA BLS/CPR required
  • Current Certification of AHA ACLS and PALS required within 90 days.
  • EVOC Driving course completion within (3) months of hire.
  • Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification required within (3) three months of hire.
  • National Institute Healthcare Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required within (1) one year of hire.
  • Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) within (9) nine months of hire date.
  • Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC) attendance required within (1) year of hire.
  • NIMS Training IS 100, 200, and Hazmat within 90 days.
  • Specialty certification: FP-C required within two (2) years of hire
  • Certified American Heart Association Instructor in at least one level (BLS, ACLS, PALS), within (2) two years of hire

Maintain a valid driver's license.

Have and maintain an acceptable driving record per Mercyhealth's HR.100 Fleet and Driver Safety policy.

For those driving their personal vehicles:

Maintain a valid driver's license and reliable transportation with proof of vehicle insurance when requested. Have and maintain an acceptable driving record per Mercyhealth's HR.100 Fleet and Driver Safety policy.
