This position works remotely, requiring a telecommuting agreement and adherence to the UCSC Telecommuting/Remote Work Guidelines. The employee shall be available in a full-time capacity during assigned telecommuting work hours (specific hours to be discussed with supervisor). While telecommuting/remote working, the employee is responsible for ensuring a worksite environment suitable for accomplishing their regular job duties during scheduled hours of work and, if applicable, arranging for dependent care just as they would if they were working at the regular UCSC worksite.

The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) is a public agency supported by 12 (states and territories). Through the work of thousands of educators, Smarter Balanced created an online assessment system aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), as well as tools for educators to improve teaching and learning. Smarter Balanced is housed at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) Silicon Valley Extension.

JOB SUMMARY

Applies skills as an experienced software professional for front-end, web-based applications, with a full understanding of industry practices, community standards, and relevant policies and procedures to medium-sized projects or portions of large projects with moderate scope and complexity. Resolves a wide range of issues dealing with web-based applications. Demonstrates competency in selecting tools, methods, and techniques to obtain results.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $88,830 - $95,250/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

85% - Software Development

  • Plans, designs, develops, modifies, debugs, deploys, and evaluates complex front-end software for functional areas.
  • Analyzes existing front-end applications or works to formulate logic for new web-based systems.
  • Negotiates, develops, and executes moderately complex Quality Assurance test plans.
  • Develops conversion and system implementation plans.
  • Performs performance and integration testing and builds interfaces for a variety of internal and external constituents. Monitors and employs source code control techniques and configuration management.
  • Supports general operations across the portfolio.
  • Completes internal and external client modifications to the required specifications.
  • Drafts and updates technical documentation. Evaluates and responds to error messages, alerts, and inquiries from peer departments.

15% - Process Improvements

  • Gathers, analyzes, prepares, and summarizes recommendations for approval of front-end programming documentation.
  • Recommends and implements changes in development, maintenance, and system standards.
  • Negotiates with stakeholders on the creation of software specifications.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Experience with planning for deployment and creation of feedback mechanisms.
  • Experience ensuring that organizational practices, services, and behaviors support and promote collaboration among staff.
  • Knowledge of: OAuth2/OpenID, SAML, AD, SSO, Amazon RDS, RedShift, Thymeleaf, Angular, and AWS tasks.
  • Intermediate knowledge of secure software development.
  • Demonstrated customer service orientation skills.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Skills associated with software design, modification, implementation, and deployment, including front-end web-based programming concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to program in at least one of the following: Angular, TypeScript, CSS.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand market and educational requirements, including Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) requirements, that should inform accessibility needs within the User Interface (UI.)
  • Demonstrated ability with advising, applying, and troubleshooting user interface design to front-end applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand functional needs and how systems can support those needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated knowledge of git, command line tooling, unit testing, and Agile workflow.
  • Experience planning and providing deliverables that meet the terms of a contract.
  • Certified ScrumMaster.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This is a fully remote position, and the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.

  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
