Position Description

Contributes to the University's and Texas Tech K-12 mission through teaching and service. Provides instruction, appropriate assistance, information and tutoring. Performs instructional and educational work while serving as an online teacher. Provides feedback and grades for lessons, exams and final course grades. Organizes and develops course work, coordinates classes for students, observes and assesses the needs of the students. Maintains communication both formally and informally with students and other educators.

About the Department and/or College

Texas Tech K-12, a unit of the Texas Tech University Online division, is a state-approved online kindergarten through 12th- grade school that has been meeting students' needs for more than 25 years. Affiliated with Texas Tech University, a Carnegie tier-one research institution, Texas Tech K-12 boasts a rigorous curriculum that allows students to work ahead, make up failed credits, and achieve their goals from wherever they are. Texas Tech K-12 is a Candidate for Accreditation with NCACASI, NWAC, and SACS CASI. Texas Tech K-12 began in 1993 as a "Special Purpose District" designed to help students whose educational needs were not adequately met by traditional school districts. Since then, we have grown to serve students across the country and more than 70nations around the world.

Major/Essential Functions

This position requires one of the following Texas certifications:

  • English Language Arts, Composite; English Language Arts and Reading 7-12; English Language Arts & Reading 8-12
  • Speech Communications 6-12; Speech Communications 9-12; Speech 7-12; Speech 8-12

This position will begin as part-time, with the potential to move to full-time in June 2026 based on business needs and performance.
  • Serve as the primary instructor for online K-12 courses. This will include assessment of student learning, evaluating student homework assignments, providing regular feedback to students within 2 business days.
  • Communicate with students regularly including using online discussion boards, chat features, synchronous collaboration tools, email communications, and phone chat. Teachers will be required to respond to student questions within 24 hours / 1 business day.
  • Regular communication with full-time/lead teachers and/or principals regarding grade turnaround, student performance, curricular alignment, students of concern, and other instructional issues that need to be discussed.
  • Conduct videoconferencing and phone calls to provide instructional support to students, meet with families, and build relationships through discussion-based assessments, live instruction, informal office hours, or other modalities as determined by Texas Tech K-12.
Qualified applicants for this position will be subject to a pre-employment Texas Tech University background check, and in addition, a Texas Education Agency criminal background check and fingerprinting as required by the Texas Legislature for independent school districts.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree, State of Texas Teacher Certification in area of expertise and three (3) years teaching experience in a public or private school setting.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge of Texas curricular requirements for K-12 education.
  • 3 years classroom experience.
  • Experience with online instruction.
