Medical Assistant - General Medicine
Job Summary

Under the supervision of the UCSF Health Nurse Manager and guided by Ambulatory Services policies and procedures, the Hospital Assistant III supports patient care delivery in primary care and multispecialty ambulatory clinic settings. This role plays a critical part in enhancing the patient experience by supporting clinic flow, assisting with patient outreach, and working collaboratively with interdisciplinary care teams.
The Hospital Assistant III floats between front-office and back-office functions, performing both clerical and clinical duties. Responsibilities include direct patient care support, laboratory procedures, care coordination, and ensuring high service standards across multiple UCSF Health clinic sites.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Support & Patient Care
Perform routine clinical functions including vital signs, pain screening, allergy review, medication reconciliation, and patient history documentation. Assist with patient preparation for exams and procedures, including serving as a chaperone when needed. Administer injectable vaccines following successful completion of UCSF-specific training and competency verification. Obtain specimens and perform point-of-care testing, EKGs, phlebotomy, and other laboratory procedures in accordance with policy. Assist providers during complex medical procedures after completing required competencies. Monitor patient flow, transport patients safely, and support timely care delivery. Maintain clean, stocked exam rooms and clinical areas; monitor equipment and supplies.
Care Coordination & Documentation
Carry out provider orders, distribute after-visit summaries, schedule follow-up appointments, and support patient discharge processes. Complete referrals, obtain insurance authorizations, and assist with patient communications. Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic health record and update health maintenance records. Utilize non-provider protocols to support preventive care and screenings. Maintain required logs and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
Patient Experience & Communication
Serve as a primary point of contact for patients and families through in-person, phone, and electronic communication. Facilitate interpreter services as needed to ensure equitable access to care. Communicate appointment delays, coordinate with front-office teams, and support patient expectations. Demonstrate professionalism, cultural sensitivity, and service excellence in all interactions. Assist patients with questions or concerns using effective conflict-resolution skills.
Team Collaboration & Operations
Participate in daily huddles, leadership rounds, and outreach initiatives. Share relevant information with care team members to support continuity of care. Offer suggestions to improve clinic workflows and operations. Support coverage of phones, messaging, and electronic in-baskets as needed. Adhere to all infection control, safety, privacy, and regulatory requirements.

Department Description UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Required Qualifications

- Minimum of one year of experience as a Medical Assistant in a medical practice
- Current American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification from an approved Medical Assistant program or an equivalent combination of training and experience
- Phlebotomy certification (CPT)
- Experience using Epic (APeX) electronic health record system
- Familiarity with immunization schedules and recommendations
- Prior experience in internal medicine, geriatrics, or family medicine
- Experience working in a medical, hospital, or clinic environment
- Fluency in Spanish or Chinese (spoken, read, and written)
- Experience with disease registries, data collection, and basic data analysis
License/Certification
- Current American Heart Association CPR certification
