Occupational Summary

This is an opportunity to join a laboratory led by Dr. Jason Fan, MD, PhD, studying retinal and vitreous biology at the Duke Eye Center. We are looking for an individual excited about pursuing a career in scientific research who is seeking to gain more experience in basic science and to build their resume. The ideal candidate is someone who is highly organized, focused, passionate about science, and eager to have close mentorship by a new faculty member while collaborating with more established labs in a shared lab space. In this full-time Research Technician II position, you will become proficient in the latest molecular biology, genetic sequencing, and confocal microscopy techniques.

Work Performed

Technical duties may include biological or chemical tests and experiments including collection of ocular samples, cell or DNA/RNA isolation, generation of cDNA libraries, assistance with DNA/RNA sequencing, assistance with fluorescence-activated cell sorting experiments, immunohistochemistry, cell culture, confocal microscopy, and data analysis. Duties may also include obtaining, preparing, mounting and staining tissue, blood and other substances for microscopic examinations.

After instruction by the PI, the applicant should be comfortable with:

1. Setting up instruments, material and apparatus and operate standard laboratory equipment required for specific tests (20%)

2. Preparing culture media, chemicals, reagents and solutions (5%)

3. Assisting in the development of new research procedures and techniques. (20%)

4. Learning and becoming proficient in basic molecular biology and microscopy techniques (20%)

5. Maintaining a laboratory notebook (10%)

6. Maintaining sufficient inventory of materials, supplies and equipment for performance of duties (10%)

7. Clean and maintain standard laboratory equipment (5%)

8. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. (10%)

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training: Work requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology or other science related scientific field.

Experience: Ideally would have experience working in a basic science laboratory as an undergraduate or post-graduate researcher. None required above education/training requirement OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Anticipated Pay Range:

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $19.06 to USD $28.85.
