Overview

The Senior Engineer will lead the design, development, and implementation of microprocessor relay upgrade projects to ensure reliable substation operations. This role involves hands-on testing, troubleshooting during outages, and compliance with NERC CIP Cyber Security Standards. The Senior Engineer will collaborate across departments, provide technical guidance, and deliver training to engineers and technicians. Strong technical expertise, communication skills, and proficiency in relay software and industry standards are essential.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, development, and execution of microprocessor relay upgrade projects, ensuring system reliability and compliance.
  • Perform bench testing and commissioning of relay systems, maintaining adherence to NERC CIP password and configuration requirements.
  • Develop operational and maintenance test instructions, test plans, and capital project justifications.
  • Troubleshoot relay and system issues during outages and conduct evaluations of system disturbances.
  • Provide technical training and mentorship to engineers and relay technicians.
  • Act as a liaison with Central Engineering, Cyber Security teams, and external organizations (e.g., EPRI, NATF) to ensure alignment with standards.
  • Review and provide feedback on engineering design concepts for relay systems and upgrades.
  • Evaluate maintenance practices and recommend improvements for efficiency and reliability.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations, including executive-level briefings, as required.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, safety standards, and NERC CIP requirements; perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and with a minimum of 8 years relative work experience in either relay protection or substation system testing or
  • Master's Degree in Engineering and with a minimum of 6 years relative work experience in either relay protection or substation system testing
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and with a minimum of 8 years relative work experience In either relay protection or substation system testing
  • Master's Degree in Engineering with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and with a minimum of 6 years relative work experience In either relay protection or substation system testing
Relevant Work Experience
  • Requires work experience in any of the following areas: Power System, Relay Protection, Microprocessor based relays., required.
  • Proficient expertise in IEC 61850 protection schemes, required.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to learn and apply new topics, required.
  • Must have strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and VISIO, required.
  • Must be able to deliver exemplary customer service and develop a team spirited work environment in support of Con Edisons corporate values and mission, required.
  • Must possess superior oral and written communication skills, champion change and have the ability to influence others in order to improve the management process, required.
  • Must be well organized, detailed oriented, flexible to handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines, required.
  • Must be able to exercise independent judgment and possess the ability to render sound business decisions, required.
  • Knowledge on Protection Suite and/or various relay software, required.
  • Acute knowledge with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) CIP Standards, preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required
Physical Demands
  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
  • Use hand-eye coordination to adjust controls on equipment
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • May require local and out-of-town travel and representation of the Company at information exchange meetings including EPRI and NATF.
  • Must be willing and available to be on call, work off shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime as operating and system conditions require.
  • Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed.
