About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what's possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

At Rivian, the Mechatronics Engineer is a critical bridge between design, quality, and real-world performance. You will lead the identification and resolution of quality issues for the VHE Systems team, working cross-functionally to ensure that every system meets our rigorous standards. You will not only manage the "cradle to grave" quality lifecycle but also get hands-on by instrumenting vehicles and executing validation tests to verify that our fixes are robust and adventure ready. Additionally, you will support the team during integration testing activities, running validation tests, analyzing data, and assessing systems performance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead quality issue resolution: Serve as the primary lead for managing and closing quality issues within the VHE Systems functional group, collaborating directly with the cross functional team to investigate root causes.
  • Validation and verification: Take full responsibility for validating fixes; you will design and execute test procedures to ensure that software and hardware updates resolve identified failure modes.
  • Hands on instrumentation: Support validation activities by personally instrumenting test vehicles to capture and analyze performance data.
  • DFMEA and risk management: Work with system engineers to update and maintain standard quality documents, including system level DFMEA, PFMEA, design standards, technical specifications and control plans.
  • Systems development: Support the VHE Systems team throughout the system "V" development cycle, from initial concept through to End-of-Line (EOL) specifications and production support.
  • Campaign prevention and Lessons learnt: Capture and document key takeaways from the resolution of quality issues to drive continuous improvement, maintain a robust knowledge base and ensure campaign prevention.
  • Cross functional collaboration: Interface with Engineering, Controls, Manufacturing, and other teams to ensure a seamless transition from issue identification to validated production fix.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering (Masters Preferred)
  • 3+ years' of relevant experience in automotive systems development or equivalent industry experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in six sigma methodology and root cause analysis tools to drive technical issues to closure.
  • Experience in systems engineering, controls, and functional safety with experience working with complex mechatronics systems (both sensing and actuating)
  • Comprehensive understanding of vehicle electrical architecture, including component interfacing and low to high speed communication protocols such as CAN, LIN, and Automotive Ethernet.
  • Proficiency in high-fidelity debugging and data acquisition using industry-standard network analysis tools, including CANalyzer, CANoe, CANape, and PCAN/LIN interfaces.
  • A strong understanding of the 1st principles of physics an automotive system - the loads, forces, and overall function of the system, and the tradeoffs among design, package, function, and customer experience involved with these systems.
  • Knowledge of an automotive design and development process, system requirements, and general engineering best practices.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills with a high level of integrity.
  • Ability to prioritize and deliver under pressure, manage issues to closure, and adapt quickly to program changes.
  • Willingness to travel to suppliers, manufacturing, and testing facilities as required.
