- Design, develop, and provide ongoing support for mechanical and manufacturing systems that support plant infrastructure and utilities. These systems include piping networks, HVAC and ventilation, compressed air, chilled and process water systems, chemical distribution, exhaust systems, structural elements, and material handling support equipment.
- Prepare engineering designs and technical documentation such as system requirements, specifications, mechanical drawings, calculations, process flow diagrams, and piping and instrumentation diagrams, as required.
- Support facility layout planning and the integration of mechanical and utility systems within both new construction and existing facilities.
- Perform equipment sizing, load and capacity calculations, system layouts, and component selection for mechanical and utility infrastructure.
- Collaborate with process, facilities, and manufacturing teams to ensure mechanical systems align with operational, safety, and production needs.
- Develop equipment specifications and assist with the procurement of mechanical components, including pumps, motors, drives, heat exchangers, valves, piping materials, and structural supports.
- Coordinate with suppliers, fabricators, and contractors throughout equipment fabrication, installation, and commissioning activities.
- Support installation, startup, and commissioning efforts, including inspections, testing, and verification that systems meet design intent.
- Conduct engineering evaluations to improve system reliability, maintainability, energy performance, and cost effectiveness.
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures and maintenance strategies for mechanical and utility systems.
- Assist with diagnosing and resolving mechanical and utility system issues that affect facility or production operations.
- Participate in hazard assessments, safety evaluations, and formal design reviews for mechanical and utility systems.
- Ensure that mechanical designs and installations meet applicable codes, standards, and safety requirements.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of standardized engineering processes, specifications, and documentation methods.
- Maintain clear, professional communication and accurate technical documentation.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and technical staff when appropriate.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by management.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related field from an ABET EAC-accredited program is required.
- Five or more years of relevant professional experience is preferred; advanced degrees may substitute for a portion of the required experience.
- Demonstrated experience using CAD tools and developing or interpreting P&IDs is required.
- Hands-on experience supporting mechanical, manufacturing, facility, or utility systems, including equipment specification, purchasing, installation, and operational support, is required.
- Solid understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals related to piping systems, HVAC, utilities, and industrial infrastructure.
- Experience working within manufacturing, industrial, or highly regulated environments is preferred.
- Working knowledge of applicable mechanical engineering codes, standards, and compliance requirements is required.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing concepts and modern facility design methodologies is preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience with 2D and or 3D engineering and manufacturing software such as AutoCAD, ProE, or comparable tools.
Location/Work Arrangement:
- This position will be onsite in Oak Ridge, TN.
- Schedule is full-time, Monday - Friday 40-hour week.
