HJF is seeking a Communications Specialist II to support the Murtha Cancer Center Research Program (MCCRP) at the MCCRP Rockledge office located in Bethesda, Maryland.

The John P. Murtha Cancer Center at Walter Reed Bethesda is a modern, patient-centric, tri-service military healthcare facility. Its comprehensive core of military and civilian oncologists and other cancer- trained clinicians and researchers provide multidisciplinary cancer-care delivery and patient-family support services. Our Cancer Center, the only DoD Cancer Center of Excellence within the Military Health System, offers its patients access to cutting-edge cancer diagnostic and treatment technologies.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.


  • Primary task will include generating high-level PowerPoint presentations for the Executive team of MCCRP.
  • Assist with external communications including web communications, original articles, press releases, newsletters, scientific presentations and other related education and public promotion material in collaboration with team.
  • Manages social media pages for MCCRP.
  • Competes monthly significant activities report for MCCRP
  • Gathers data and completes the annual report for MCCRP.
  • Proofreads and edits various documents.
  • Provides administrative support as needed to the Executive team of MCCRP (Arrange and run meetings of senior leaders, creates agendas, prepares minutes, etc).
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Communications, or similar required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge and proficiency of Microsoft applications, specifically PowerPoint and Word are essential.
  • Must have outstanding writing skills.
  • Keen ability to distill complex ideas and scientific information into language appropriate for a lay audience.
  • Ability to create embedded videos and other content within presentation formats.

  • Capability and preferred proficiency in using various Artificial Intelligence tools (Gemini; Grok; Chat GPT; others) to support document creation and PowerPoint/presentation creation.

  • Must have sharp editorial, proofreading and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to work within a team environment and interact well at all levels of an organization.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 public trust background investigation.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $67,500-$91,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
