Pay Range:$125,310- $153,444 Annually

Job Description

We have an opening for aHazardous Material Packaging and Transportation Associatewithin the Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) Directorate, Packaging and Transportation Safety Program that will support all of Global Security's (GS) Programs. In this role you will coordinate the packaging, shipping and transport of hazardous materials while ensuring compliance with State and Federal regulations as they apply to the shipping and transportation as well as Materials Control and Accountability (MC&A) of controlled materials/parts (i.e., nuclear, hazardous, radioactive and classified materials/parts). You will collaborate with GS scientists and high-level personnel to provide advanced technical support to determine optimal packaging and transportation options for the materials/parts associated with their projects, procurement of necessary materials both hazardous and non-hazardous in support of their work and coordinating offsite and onsite events as the operational lead for PPE and dosimetry needs.

This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You will have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

You will

  • Interpret and execute State and Federal regulations [e.g., Department of Transportation (DOT), Department of Energy (DOE), and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)] as they apply to the packaging, shipping and transportation of hazardous, biological, radioactive, and classified materials/parts.
  • Complete preparation of material/part shipments by analyzing and interpreting complex chemical and radiological data to make an initial determination of DOT classification for hazardous materials (e.g., chemical, biological and radioactive).
  • Prepare and process documentation to meet all types of transportation requirements including manifests, classified material receipts, federal carrier notifications, state notifications, and California Highway Patrol notifications (as necessary).
  • Track HazMat shipments via Fed EX-approved SenseAware GPS monitoring system.
  • Perform Material Balance Area and Materials Accountability and Control duties and responsibilities as required, specifically controlled materials and sealed source inventories, tracking, transfer paperwork, and source integrity measurements.
  • Develop, review, and maintain procedures and training associated with packaging, shipping and transportation activities.
  • Facilitate HAZMAT shipments with Vaults and Transportation Group and Traffic Office, including working in ShipIT and SOARS portal.
  • Arrange and facilitate dosimetry at offsite locations for all GS and training exercise participants.
  • Provide advanced technical shipping support for all types of HAZMAT generated at LLNL and maintain packaging/shipping schedules to meet important performance and regulatory requirements.
  • Procurement and receiving of new radioactive sources, both via commercial vendors and custom fabrication through collaboration with GS programs.
  • Event tracking, coordination, and reporting (including maintaining records for future audits).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top-Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor's degree in hazardous materials management and waste technologist, radiation protection, chemistry, materials science, or environmental science or technology or Associate's degree that contains significant science and math coursework, or a Certification in Hazardous Materials, Radiation Protection or related field or related scientific field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of State and Federal regulations as they apply to classified and/or hazardous, explosive, and radioactive materials packaging, shipping, and carrier operations with experience in their application (e.g., BOLs, Dangerous Goods declarations, CDL regulations).
  • Advanced understanding of proper labeling, placarding, and packaging of hazardous materials along with proper load segregation and securement.
  • Advanced experience applying DOT classification to materials.
  • Advanced understanding of Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements, MC&A procedures and standards and techniques and how to apply them to the packaging, shipment and transport of controlled materials.
  • Advanced organization skills, attention to detail, accuracy, and follow through.
  • Ability to successfully complete and maintain all Federal, State, LLNL and DOT training requirements.
