The Position

2026 Summer Intern - Discovery Oncology

Department Summary

The Department of Discovery Oncology at Genentech seeks a highly talented and motivated intern to investigate fundamental mechanisms of cellular stress and adaptive responses in cancer-relevant model systems. The intern will contribute to ongoing discovery research efforts by applying molecular, cellular, and biochemical techniques (in particular chromatin biology techniques such as ATAC-seq and ChIP-seq) to characterize stress-associated transcriptional responses. This position provides hands-on experience in experimental biology embedded within a translational research environment, with exposure to how basic mechanistic insight supports therapeutic discovery.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, onsite.

The Opportunity

  • Work in a collaborative environment with other scientists in the group to design and execute experiments.

  • Keep detailed records of the research findings using an electronic notebook.

  • Communicate and present results to a diverse group of scientists during internal meetings.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June 2026.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are

Required Education:

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required Majors:

  • Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Cancer Biology, Biochemistry, or related field.

Required Skills:

  • Hands-on research experience in a biology lab environment with prior experience in mammalian cell culture.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Complements our culture and the standards that guide our daily behavior & decisions: Integrity, Courage, and Passion.

  • Able to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment.

  • Experience in basic molecular, cellular, and biochemical techniques including immunoblotting and immunoprecipitation.

  • Experience in chromatin biology and sequencing-based techniques such as RNA/ATAC/ChIP-seq is a plus.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location ofCalifornia is $46.00 hour.Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
