The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking an archaeologist intern to join our Minneapolis, Minnesota, team for a temporary, on-site position during summer 2026. Responsibilities include fieldwork, reporting, and task management across a variety of projects. You will work on a variety of cultural resources tasks, which may include background research, Tribal engagement, cultural surveys, artifact analysis, cultural report preparation, and internal review to support project compliance with local, state, and federal cultural resource laws.

A successful person in this role is detail-oriented, thorough, and organized. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and can work independently as well as collaboratively with project teams to meet client and project needs.

Your impact - key responsibilities

  • Fieldwork: conduct fieldwork by identifying soil stratigraphy, artifacts, cultural features, and site boundaries during surveys; collaborate with team members throughout the field session; assist with site recording using ArcGIS Field Maps; and help ensure equipment is prepared and maintained before and after fieldwork.

  • Artifact analysis: perform laboratory duties including artifact cleaning, processing, identification, and curation, as well as artifact photography and database management.

  • Report writing: prepare field site forms and written reports.

  • Task management: oversee and coordinate project tasks to help ensure timely, high-quality delivery.

  • Collaboration: build and maintain strong internal relationships and support client engagement.

About the opportunity

  • Timeline: this internship opportunity runs for approximately three months starting in the spring of 2026. Start and end dates are flexible to accommodate class schedules, finals, and holidays.

  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Minneapolis, Minnesota, office.

  • Travel expectation: be willing to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs.

  • Work environment: applicants must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction, industrial, and remote work sites. Some work locations may also feature steep slopes and dense vegetation. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required; safety training will be provided. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Physical requirements: this role requires long periods spent standing, walking, and carrying equipment weighingup to 30 pounds in a variety of weather conditions. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you - required core competencies

  • Education: pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited college in archaeology, anthropology, historic preservation, architectural history, or a related field.

    • Demonstrated success and completion of at least four courses relevant to major.

    • Must have a minimum of one full-time semester of undergraduate or graduate coursework remaining after the internship.

  • Strong writing, editing, and communication skills.

  • Software: experience using MS Office suite (Teams, Word, Excel, Outlook), GIS, and cultural resource databases.

  • Working style: strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Detail-oriented, thorough, and organized approach.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

Compensation: anticipated range of $22.66-$25.78/hour. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. This position is classified as non-exempt (hourly) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
