The expected hiring range for this position is:

$79,300.00-$112,767.00.

About the Role:
The Fermilab's Magnet Systems Department is seeking a Mechanical Engineer (3-year term). Under general directions, you will be supporting the design, analysis, and development of superconducting magnets for particle accelerators. This role involves hands-on engineering work across design, simulation, R&D planning, procurement, coil fabrication, magnet assembly, magnet testing and data analysis. You will contribute to projects such as the Electron Ion Collider and participate in reviews by the Department of Energy (DOE).

What your day-to-day as a Mechanical Engineer at Fermilab will look like:

  • Perform mechanical design, analysis, and assembly of superconducting (SC) magnets for particle accelerators, including design analysis and fabrication of superconducting coils.
  • Participate in and lead efforts related to structural design of SC magnets, perform R&D and apply feedback to the design.
  • Participate in the writing and editing of design documentation such as requirements specifications, technical design reports, construction oversight and assembly (travelers).
  • Understand the design and test results of similar SC accelerator magnets to optimize the design of new SC accelerator magnets.
  • Participate in the overall optimization of new SC accelerator magnets collaborating with other scientists and engineers.
  • Work in a team environment and under the supervision of a senior engineer.
  • Provides technical direction to draftspersons, designers, engineering associates and technicians, as assigned.
  • Communicate with outside vendors, contractors, and fabricators verbally and through written specifications and engineering drawings.
  • May participate in technical conferences and publication.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Abide by and be responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.

Skills and Attributes for Success:

  • Bachelor's in an applicable Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution with 2+ years of engineering experience, or a Master's or PhD in an applicable Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution.

Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate expectations clearly using verbal and written practices with customers / stakeholders, and with team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under tight schedule and shifting priorities in a collaborative team environment.
  • Creative problem-solving skills in engineering design and troubleshooting of mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in CAD software for 3D modeling and 2D drafting (e.g., Siemens NX or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret technical drawings, with knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Solid understanding of engineering mechanics, including statics, stress, strain, and deflection analysis - both mechanical and thermal.
  • Experience with FEM software (e.g., ANSYS or equivalent).
  • Basic familiarity with electrical and magnetic principles such as current, voltage, resistance, and magnetic fields, especially as they relate to superconducting magnet system.

  • Onsite: This is an onsite role, and the candidate must be able to work from our Batavia office.
